Re: Gift for my son

If he likes bird watching why not buy him binoculars and take him for a bird watching trip OR introduce him to one of the bird photography clubs and let him go for a trip where he learns the basics.

Good way to encourage him to expand on his existing hobby.

Re: Gift for my son

Introduce him to baking. A class for a week will go a long way, and he would be able to dish out some wonderful tea cakes.

I would also recommend karate- a direct contact karate like KyoKushin. As I hold a green belt of that style, I recommend karate. Karate promotes self improvement, self confidence and discipline. I would also recommend either tennis or badminton as one of the members already suggested.

Re: Gift for my son

How about a special international vacation ?

If he is interested in history - a tour of Berlin .

If he is interested in nature - a good international park (Africa ?)

If he is interested in sports - take him to a match / series of his choice.

If he is interested in cars - an F1 race ?

Experiences are far more remembered vs a material gift, especially if you have a lot of the latter.

With sufficient planning, the above can be done on a budget- not cheap but not super expensive either

Try Microlight flying - myflying.in

You can choose from a 10/20 min pvt mini flight. A short but novel experience.

Re: Gift for my son

My 2 cents...

1. Since he is into photography, take him for a Wildlife tour, take one of the Jungle lodges package or visit a National park and indulge in lot of safaris. This should bring him close to nature and also hone his photography skills. Wildlife photography also teaches one to be stay calm and be patient.
2. You can get him a drone which will certainly keep him engaged for quite long. Later, he can get the photos and videos edited and published and can start his own blog/vlog

Give him everything that you, as a father, alone can give him.

Being is, specifically for an adolescent, far far more important than buying.

Trust me, he will turn out fine.

Best wishes.

Interesting question -
Keeping bird watching in mind, a good pair of binoculars - like a Nikon Aculon A211.

How about a VR headset like Oculus? It will keep him engaged for at least a few days.

Re: Gift for my son

+2 to a good pair of binoculars/telescope.

You must have taken him to a science/regular museum. Remember anything that piqued his interest or had him in awe? Or anything else? As a child, I, for one, was keen to understand how IC engines and transmissions work once I saw a cut-out model at a science museum. For weeks I sought to delve deeper into the world of automobiles, fascinated by the magic that engineers have managed to achieve.
If you can recollect an experience with your child on those lines, then get him something challenging that helps him further his knowledge and interest.

Finally, as already mentioned above, it's a great age to be starting a bank account/SIP in his name and teach him a thing or two on finances. Watching how interest compounds like a planted seed is nothing short of a wonder!

Regards and wishing your boy a very happy birthday!

Re: Gift for my son

Nice Thread - this might become a go to place for anyone to search for gifting ideas.

My suggestions,

1. (Like most of them told) Gym Set. Decathlon has a good home gym, I was planning to get one. Looking at his enthusiasm, he might add more equipments.

2. Good over the ear headphone

Any skill that you teach is worth more than any material gift that you may give. Karate, football, etc. Please do not give your son a distraction machine, also known as tablets and smartphones.

I feel this is the best advice. Have you asked him what he wants instead of asking a bunch of strangers?

To the people suggesting home gyms, A 12-year-old needs to go out and play, not lift weights. I am not sure even professional gyms accept kids that young.

Any and all the ideas are welcome within reasonable budget of a middle class father!
Take him to a residential school for the underprivileged children or an old age home, where they can accommodate you for a couple of days. A 2 days stay living the humble lifestyle they live, can be magic to young people. This gives him an opportunity to reflect on all the blessings he already has in his life.

It might not stimulate his brain, but would stimulate his heart about gratitude. Trust me, the major area where our kids lag behind today is in being entitled and lacking gratitude. Once children realize how blessed they are, they become more compassionate and more sincere.

Whatever budget you have set aside for the gift, use it for helping that school or old age home. Let charity go through your son.

Sorry for pointing out one of the most unglamorous choices in this thread.
