Why to Mask the no. plate?

My apologies in advance if this is a silly question.

But, I have been thinking, why is it necessary to mask the no. plate of vehicle in the photo when published somewhere (especially a forum like team bhp).
Also we see that the plate being masked in TV (programs on criminal investigation etc are exception though).
I don't understand the reason behind that.
Can someone tell me the reason for this?

its for privacy purpose and in future if the vehicle is stolen then the site isn't held responsible

this is what i feel why we mask the no.

I think strictly for private and personal reason. People prefer not disclose their identities on open platforms like forums. Your car is a part of your identity.
