I myself was planning to set up an auto car wash centre in Bangalore city as I returned to India end of 2005. Considering the total cost of the project, it was set back for an year to do the market study, comparison, pricing part etc. but now it looks like a project half closed infront of me. Its very tough to give the same pricing what I used to pay for the same in Oman, Muscat (just Rs.100 for a full machine wash, vacuum and drying all done in 20 minutes). People in middle east (i am not sure of the eurpean and american cities) prefer machine wash due to the following reasons:
1. Time saving (max 30 minutes)
2. Very clean and neat work without a spot in or out
3. Very cost effective (Rs.100 to 150 range)
4. Attached fast food counter which serves everything
5. No need to leave the car and come back later to collect (its shorter than a hair cut)
6. Less chances of any scratches or marks if branded material is used

Now here comes the difficulty in India executing the same:
1. No gurantee on an uninterrupted power supply
2. Cost of importing german/swiss machines to get a perfect wash
3. Can not offer a price anything less than Rs.250 considering the cost
4. People are not used to machine wash, also have lot of misconceptions
5. Getting a license for car wash and food outlet makes the job tougher
6. Taxing makes the whole affair further more expensive. (No taxes Mid east)
7. Aquiring a plot within city limits alone will need a budget above 2 crores

A car wash alone can not make much profit in India. It has to be a centre with auto accessories, wheel balancing, basic repairs, machine wash, vacuum, food outlet, entertainment room etc. the list goes on. Eventually it will look like a mini super store with lot of heavy machines around. A normal budget will be above 5 crores for the project. When can the project reach a breakeven point with an average work on a daily basis ? 1 year project study and research is not too long for this. Suggestions welcome.

well the mrf shop is similar to what you have mentioned but the food outlet part seems to be low on the priority list now.. so they only have coffee and a proper lounge for waiting. they also do wheel balancing and allignment and a few other things

Mr. Expert - Daily Car wash - any feedbacks?

I saw an AD in todays newspaper which says:

At your doorstep:
Exterior Body Wash (daily except sunday)
Vaccum Cleaning (Twice in a month)
Soap oil water wash
Wax Body Polish (once a month)

Small cars - 400/- per month

Baleno - 500/- per month.. I am planning to take this & see how this works. They claim that they have done a bit of study on the problems associated with local cleaners, taken feedbacks too. Also consumables are included in the monthly charges.

There are local cleaners around who don't do a good job, problem is that they don't give absolute attention to details & creates scratches.

Car wash in Bombay

There is a car wash unit in
1. The Oberoi Mall ( basement) in Goregaon, beside the WE Highway
2. The Inorbit Mall ( ground floor)
3. Behind Eros Cinema, Churchgate
4. Somewhere in Mulund

They are open from 12 noon and take the last car at 7 pm, seven days a week.

These are from the same organisation, called Car Spa ( not sure about the name)

The service is expensive, Rs 150 for exterior wash and Rs 300 for interior vacuuming, but the quality of service is good, with friendly staff.

I go there to get my car cleaned on an average, once a month.
The fellows who clean in my building don't do a thorough job, as they have to clean many cars every day, and they use the same pail of water across two-three cars, so that the water is almost black with dirt and grime when the third car is to be washed.

Car Spa is a good add on, although expensive.

Regards
