Used airbag fabric recycled & used in manufacturing sports shoes by Asics

Asics, a multinational sportswear brand, is said to have come up with new sports shoes made from recycled airbags.

According to reports, Asics has collaborated with Japanese company Toyoda Gosei to make use of the leftover airbag fabric, which would otherwise be thrown away. The airbag fabric is said to be strong, flexible and highly durable, making it a great fit for use in the upper part of a shoe.

The new shoe model is called "Asics Gel-Sonoma 15-50", which is said to be a cross-country variant of the brand's trail running shoes. It retains the red stitching and numbering found on all airbags manufactured by Toyoda Gosei. The sportswear brand has even added an image of an inflated airbag on the tongue of the shoe.

The Asics shoe made using recycled airbags is priced at around 16,500 yen (Rs 10,346) and will be available from January 26.

Toyoda Gosei is known to find clever ways of recycling leftover auto parts. The company already transforms airbag fabric & excess leather from the steering wheel into making bags, pens cases and many other similar products, which are sold under the 'Re-S' brand.

The collaboration for the shoes is said to be just the start, with reports suggesting that Asics would launch many more 'sustainable products' in the future.

Sheer marketing. Toyoda gets value for material it would have otherwise scrapped. The shoe makers get RM for the upper at discounted prices. The customer gets a shoe whose touch and feel in inferior to other ‘regular’ variants, and yet pays extra because it is supposed to be the environmental friendly choice.

ASICS is not the first or the only sports shoe brand who is playing this recycled branding game. These corporations will go to any length to eek every extra paisa out of gullible and sentimental customers. Had they actually given two hoots about the environment and using recycled raw materials, they would have standardised it. In fact, they could have started by making shoes that actually last for more than a year.

It’s all fast fashion. Rant over.

I am struggling to understand recycled in this context.
Does recycled mean used airbags? So many collisions where the airbag is deployed?
If not, the "leftover" would indicated virgin raw material. So where is the recycle part?
