Paraskavedekatriaphobia!!! (Friday the 13th)

"It's been estimated that [U.S] $800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day because people will not fly or do business they would normally do." - Donald Dossey, Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today is Friday the 13th.

Considered terribly unlucky by some. To me, it's just another day. But I know of some people that will do some strange things today.

More can be studied here.

Why don't you tell us the significance of Friday the 13th in your life? Whether it is feared, ignored or avoided? Any special significance, any phobias, anything that you would do (or not do) on this day.

I too just realized that today is Friday the 13th only after reading this thread. To me it doesn't make a difference. I would just ignore it and carry on with my daily chores.

I really didn't believe in friday the 13th. I knew about it when I was a small kid, but after a few incidents I kind of have a phobia of taking out my car on that day.

When I was staying abroad on the night of friday the 13th we had gone out for a dinner to some restaurant. My dad gave the car (Toyota Crown) for valet parking and we went up to the restaurant. When we came down after dinner and asked for the car, we were shocked when we saw the car parked, with no tyres and wheels. Someone had flicked the tyres and wheels and left the car on bricks. Ended up taking a cab back home and had to get a new set of wheels and tyres. The restaurant refused to pay for it since the rule is valet parking at owner's risk.

The next year was even worse. I Was coming back home on fri the 13th with the driver from school. The driver had just joined a couple of weeks back. He was a 80+ year old man. We pulled upto the gate of the house and pressed the button to open the gate. The driver had misjudged the distance and when the gate opened it hit the car. The driver got fully tensed and put the car in reverse. Went back so fast that he drove into a tree. Again got psyched didn't know what to do. put to first and floored it. End result drove straight into the half open gate. My dad later fired him. End result the Merc E class was under repair for 1 month with complete rear and front damage.

The next year on Friday the 13th my dad drove into a truck as he dozed off while driving. his leg went on the accelerator and he hit a truck at more than 80kmph. The merc was badly damaged and Mercedes Benz Singapore took 3 months to repair the car.

Then here in bangy, my driver when coming to pick up me from college had an accident in teh lancer. A truck reversed into our car and we had to replace the bonnet.

Since then we dont take our cars out on Friday the 13th. I dont know if it's coincidence or what but all this was too much.

Umm.. viddy, I'll be the first one to ask you this. Why would you hire a 80+ year old man as a driver?
I mean no offense, ofcourse but I ask because the reaction time of a person that old would be slow.

I was too small then. in 5-6th standard. Need to ask my dad. I guess in singapore there are a lot of old people who have no means of earning money so easy to find a person.

Since I was young it could be an exaggeration by me. must be in his 70's probably.

but was too uncanny to happen always on Friday the 13th. Stopped using car on that day since last 4-5 years back.

Came in a friends car today to work.

Paraskavedekatriaphobia. It's derived from the greek words for Friday, 13 and fear.

And do try to keep your eyes open, when you read this.

Just for that, see you in court.

Remind me to barbeque all cameras from the next party onwards.
