I suspect it is happening everywhere, it is even worse. I recently picked up a Kannada weekly [Sudha Magazine], and was shocked to see content mostly in English, written in Kannada script.

I took this small AD content from their e-magazine. What I have marked in red, are the Kannada words. Rest are English words written in Kannada script.

@Samurai: It was Sanskrt once, it's English now. Elitism is strong as usual.

Curious though it may seem, when stuff goes wrong, it conks out, not off.

Also, pulling the plug on something has entirely negative connotations (ie switching it off) and does not mean deciding to buy something. The correct phrase is pulling the trigger.

Yes, I know, that sounds pretty negative too, as in deciding to kill a new TV, but hey, that's English for you :uncontrol

Waterlogging, despite my spellchecker and Wikipedia, is one word. It is not water logging, which is the sort of thing that a person who is in charge of a reservoir or sluice gate might do: log water.

Here's another one that annoys me. It is not a typical Indian misuse, just a ridiculous nonsense that has got lapped up from some ridiculous Americans...

Break vs Brake.

The same goes with then vs. than. Eg. Checked out the Ciaz in flesh the other day and turns out, the City is better then the Ciaz.

Break and brake is one of my regular misspellings.

I'm moderately good at English usage, having been brought up to it, and having done quite a lot of reading, but I never claim to be good at spelling it! :uncontrol

I used to have a similar-ish problem : THEIR or THIER ?? :confused:

... until someone told me, it's spelled like THE with the IR added on to the end. That fixed me forever.

If you do a search for the word 'then' or 'there' here, 90% of the time it would have been used in place of than/their!!

Tut tut, it is 'bestest', not 'betterest'. lol:

In those days, rakes were made of steel, and yes, I learnt the lesson the hard way! I still remember my father telling me off and saying that a person can loose an eye because of a rake left on the ground. Now they are plastic and the just bend. But I still won't leave a rake like that.

With its/its and there/their, I know and understand which is right --- but I still often type the wrong one. I don't understand what causes this brain/fingers disconnect <Blush>
