Shouldn't it be 'pile-ups' (the plural of pile-up)

Are you referring to the hyphenation? If so, I would think that both, with and without the hyphen would be acceptable.

However, if you are referring to "pilesup", I tend to think that it was a pun. There seem to be many, behind the wheel, who seem to be seated on their brain!

Or since there must have been a lot of pain caused due to the "rear" endings, maybe just "piles" would have been enough?

Sorry, couldn't resist it!

Cheers,

Has 'line spacing' replaced 'full stop' to show end of sentence? Is this a new trend or just bending grammar rules?

Bending the rules of Grammar. Nothing replaces the full stop punctuation mark.

I had a doubt regarding some information I read about abstract nouns in a class 4 textbook. The definition has been given as "Nouns that we cannot see, hear, taste, touch or smell are called abstract nouns." The examples being cited are 'music' and 'neighbourhood'. Can these two be treated as abstract nouns? We can hear, produce and even sell/buy music. So, it seems to me that music can't be an abstract noun but I have read otherwise in some places. And 'neighbourhood' as per me should be a concrete noun but is there any way it can be considered abstract?

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

Nowadays I find youngsters saying "No Issues" as if it is a cool way to say "No Problem"
Call up any call center for arranging an appointment with a service tech and invariably you will hear - No Issues.

Also, subordinates in my organization say - "No Problem" - when a task they are expected to do and have been employed to do, is being assigned to them.
Why should it be a problem, it is their job.

Maybe I am getting old now.

No problem with no problem. If not as old as the hills, it is as old as I am, which is almost that old!

No Issues? Actually, this smacks of matrimonial ads!

Unless it is American usage that I am unfamiliar with, no problem would be the more English thing to say.

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

I have seen many people use the phrase "my bad". Is it a proper English (not American) phrase? If it is, would someone know when and how this became common parlance.

Mods Note:
I am sorry, if this was discussed earlier. I wasn't able to find if it was discussed earlier, since the search option does not seem to understand whole phrases in quotes. So, when I searched for "my bad" (with the quotes) I had results that had "my" and "bad" individually rather than its occurrence in the form that I searched for.

From what I remember - it is from American sports (basketball I think). A newly immigrated player of African origin, whose native language had the same word for "bad" and "fault" started saying "my bad" when he meant "my fault". His team mates picked it up, then their opponents and so on; and over the course of a couple of decades it became a standard term for "I messed up".

It is not.

Not traditional English, but it has been a part of "modern" English for quite a while now.

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

And NDTV continue to come up with bloopers

Quote:
Swiss great Roger Federer became the oldest player in the open era to win the Australian Open title for the sixth time at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday
What sort of sentence is that?? How can one be the oldest player to win for the sixth time?

That's a tough one!

It says that, out of those who have won the title six times (is there more than one?), he is the oldest. It makes my brain hurt even trying to say what I guess they meant.

Probably these two facts belong in two sentences. This is his sixth win; he is the oldest-ever winner.

Beats me. But I dislike tennis anyway.

This catchy headline in The New York Times can be an excellent case study for budding journos.
