Indeed I meant noughties --- but pronounced naughties.
Instead of telling the joke, I gave away the punchline.
stupid:stupid:. Stupid enough to go straight for the smiley limit!
Today's headline NDTV.com

Shouldn't it be 'from' instead of 'of' ? (Sorry for nitpicking, Praveen, am just clearing my doubt)

In my opinion 'make out of' is correct and not 'make out from'. Experts can comment. May be both are wrong!!

Pramod, I think it should be "what do you make of it"

I think it should be "What do you make of this".
Not "out of" or "from"
We can always wait for Thad to confirm.

agree: Confirmed from multiple sources that it's "What do you make of this" :)
"What do you make out of this?" is only valid if you are holding up the ape heads and suggesting that a necklace project is on the cards. Actually, not even then- it would be "What do you make out of these?"

Or
what do you make of this?
Isn't it one of the
Airplane jokes?
"I could make a hat... or a boat..."
'What do you make out of this?'
'What do you make out from this?'
'What do you make of this?'
I feel all three are correct. I prefer to use the second one, but one can always use the other two too.

I don't think it's correct. I think this can be only used when you are actually making something out of it - i.e. "This is a piece of wood, there are a lot of things you can make out of it. You can make a stool out of it or a table". Only one of the 3 choices given by vnabhi is correct, the third one.
I can't make anything of what's happening here. :)
