It is, for us - upbringing makes us expect an explicit response. "Mm hmm" or Unh hunh" is perfectly acceptable in US but not in Europe.

Come to think of it, in many parts of India people don't know how to formally acknowledge thanks given to them. The usual response is an amiable bobbing of the head, sometimes accompanied by a smile!

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

I came across this thread:
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...uspension.html

Everyone has used the word "scissor". Shouldn't it be scissors, because it always comes as a pair (like "trousers")?

Rohan, you're right; it ought to be scissors.
Scissor is plain wrong.

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

I've noticed recently a tendency to incorrectly use the word should. In most instances, could or might would have been appropriate. Speaking of suggested possibilities, might is probably correct, but should is absolutely wrong.

Oh God! Nitrous Power, you want to put the country under a dictator! I'll be damned if that happens! If you become the President of India we'll all be dead!

I would if I could, but I can't because I won't. However, I should!

"I can't because I won't" sounds 'wrong/incorrect' to me. "I won't because I can't" seems to make more sense.

"However, I should" could be better said as "However, I ought to", I think!

Help!

SS-Traveller didn't really mean to make sense, but to make a word play., but both make sense. The first is a refusal, the second is a statement of inability.

That's not fair!
Am I losing my sense of humour?
Be brutally honest, please!

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

I have a burning question. Why is it that people use "SMS" language while texting on the phone? or using Whatsapp? Is regular English that hard to type out or use? It makes me think that they don't know proper english at all.
