Re: Cancer treatment - Lessons to share

Thank you so much, Narayan sir for sharing this with us. You have opened our eyes on financial planning, insurance and most importantly, reminded about the only certainty in life - our mortality.

Sincere prayers and wishes for your journey in conquering it over the next 2 years. Please take care.

Dear Naryan Sir,
I wish you speedy recovery. You have already survived the cancer mentally and it is just a matter of time for your physical recovery. Keep it up your positive attitude and clarity of thought. Please be active here in Team-BHP so that we members can at least distract you from this ordeal by agreeing and disagreeing with you.

Re: Cancer treatment - Lessons to share

Dear Mr Narayan

Just saw this thread - have always admired how articulate and balanced you are, and that is reflected in how you are coping with this disease and also using it to help others. Praying for a full and speedy recovery.

Covid has indeed created a number of medical risks beyond the direct effects of the disease - have heard of several cases where cancer had spread beyond what could have been detected early on due to people skipping their routine medicals, and it has caused psychological illnesses triggered by isolation from friends and family too.

Your recommendation that people take on a proper insurance policy is also critical. For most Team BHPians, the ₹3-5 lakhs that a typical corporate policy covers is not something that will break the bank - but treatment for serious cancers and other chronic disease can cost a lot. A friend’s husband had a massive heart attack and was on a ventilator for 45 days - the cost added up to upwards of ₹30 lakhs even before he gets well enough to take a bypass surgery which has been recommended. Fortunately, they could afford this. There are high value policies available from several insurers, and I would strongly recommend taking one (perhaps with a high deductible that makes it cheaper) immediately.

Thanks for sharing the details of your treatment and hope to see you make a full recovery soon.

Re: Cancer treatment - Lessons to share

Hello Mr. Narayan, came across this thread just now. Very shocking and disturbing to read of your fight with the dreaded disease. At the same time, I greatly admire and respect what you have done - by acknowledging and sharing with all on this forum. But that's no surprise given that you have always believed in blessing so many with your rich experience till date on the forum, and I am sure, off it as well.

While dealing with the actual disease is itself immensely difficult, figuring out the finances also is a great part and that, which you have rightly pointed out.

Doing proactive annual/regular medical checks is just the first step towards identifying what goes on inside our bodies.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Re: Cancer treatment - Lessons to share

Again there's a disbelief Mr Narayanan within me. The question asked by me to me is "why did it have to be you?"

Thanks for the very comprehensive details you've penned covering all aspects right from the doctor /hospital to predicament of family members with other near and dear ones and also finances. Life is uncertain and hence one needs to be prepared for such shocks.

But I can also conclude that your posts depict that you're very strong from the inside and this would pay you rich dividends on the recovery front.

Ending on a lighter vein, a senior colleague was once operated for piles. It was done with general anaesthesia. Many other colleagues, some with families turned up to visit him late in the evening. He had gained consciousness by then.

He yelled "have you people heard about any Hindi film hero suffering from piles in the film?" He further said "cancer is a favourite health setback in films for heroes not piles". He hence fell cursed. Everyone burst into peals of laughter.

Wishing you a very speedy recovery.

Re: Cancer treatment - Lessons to share

Vivek, hats off to you for being candid with your experiences in battling cancer. I wish you abundance of good health.

You are totally right about religiously doing an annual medical check-up, medical insurance and writing a will. Also cutting sugar from your diet, as it is a big killer. I urge all the forum members to take your invaluable advice and do the best they can.

Re: Cancer treatment - Lessons to share

Dear Sir,

When this thread popped up, it was a shock.

My mother-in-law was a breast cancer survivor, but unfortunately, she fell victim to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Very recently, within the last 2 months, my 82 year old mother was diagnosed with Stage I Colon Cancer and she went through with the surgery recommended by the Doctors to get part of her Colon removed.

Like you have mentioned, I believe it is important that we all keep tabs on our health and ensure that we go through our annual check-ups to keep things under check and control.

I pray to God for your speedy and complete recovery.

Best,
Krish
