72 years!

A person born on August 15, 1947 would be 72 today. He/She would have run a full course in his/her materialistic life and would probably be looking back with satisfaction.

A nation, however, is too young at 72. Especially one that lays claim to thousands of years of history, mythology and culture; yet was devoid of its identity for over 300 years. The year 1947 marks the birth of a new consciousness for India, a kind of rebirth if you will.

The story of our capital city perhaps best symbolises the tale of the nation. Bogged down, destroyed, defiled; yet defiant and ever willing to regenerate!

Blaming the nation is easy, building it is difficult. On the underpinnings of the sacrifices and selfless martyrdoms of crores of our brethren, we must get up a nation that represents and respects the myriad diversities that constitute our motherland.

Thank you dailydriver for your beautiful and wise message. Each one of us has a role and a duty to help build the nation. We all contribute by obeying the law, doing our jobs well , paying our taxes and voting. Some may do more by creating jobs or writing policy or building businesses etc. I hope I live to see 2047 and know for myself where we reach as a nation by that August 15th and maybe pen an article on Team BHP then:-). We are in the last hour of our 72nd Independence Day. Here is how the residents of Kerala celebrated. Kerala is reeling under floods due to the continuous rain in the state. But the floods doesn't dampen their spirit of patriotism.

As the country celebrates 72nd Independence Day, a photo from Kannammoola, a suburb in Thiruvananthapuram, shows the residents hoisting the national flag despite chest-deep water.



The raging flood could not deter residents from hoisting the national flag on the Mullaperiyar dam. Despite the water level reaching dangerously close to permissible levels, residents of the area hoisted the flag at one of the dam's towers as a mark of respect to the country. In this photo, residents are seen unfurling the tricolour at the Mullaperiyar dam.



Kerala has been witnessing heavy downpour since August 8. 70 people have died so far. The state has been put on rain red alert.

On the Diamond Jubilee of Indian independence, what can we hope for as a nation?

While

1. Peace
2. Prosperity
3. Harmony
4. Health

are what will keep us happy, I wish we could, as a society, also imbibe the purity and clarity that characterises a diamond.

Lot has been achieved in the past seven decades and half, but a lot more needs to be done.

An octogenarian democracy needs to be mature enough to accommodate different viewpoints and varying ideologies. Our hoary past should ideally act as a springboard for a progressive future.

The centenary celebration in 2047 would, hopefully, see us in the forefront of world affairs. But more importantly, it should see us devoid of the ills of hunger, homelessness and narrow mindedness.

Best wishes to everyone on our 76th Independence Day.
