| My Tata Tiago JTP Turbo Petrol | A Tribute to Jayem's Tata that performed IntroductionJTP stands for Jayem Tata Performance, but during its brief but significant existence, it has managed to represent Joy, Torque, and Performance, or what I like to call Jayem's Tata that Performed. This post is a compilation to celebrate the spirit of the Team that made a regular car, go like sting. ![]() It is a story narrating the journey of a car that was made by people who had racing in their DNA and, people who embraced it in the real world. It is a car that was born on the track to be driven on the road! 0: Setting the Race SceneMass market car manufacturers have been building cars that are sensible, practical, frugal and inoffensive. It is sometimes the passion to make something fun which brings about an extension to the brand that goes on to becoming something significant. The GTI for Volkswagen, AMG for Mercedes, M for BMW, and Abarth for Fiat all had someone that sees the potential of the brand with character. Something more than what the world believes is the fact. The partnership of Jayem Automotive and Tata Motors, that formed the JTSV Joint Venture and cars that carried the JTP badge. ![]() Jayem Automotive is a respected name in the auto world in the country and have been making the cars made by Tata Motors really fast. The first attempt of them at making anything exciting was the Tata Indica Sport in 2002. This car was showcased as a concept and was thoroughly reworked by the team to deliver speed and performance. This continued to remain a concept and many models that followed in the years to come were showcased at the AutoExpo and Geneva motor show. ![]() The Indica Vista Sport, Bolt Sport and the SuperNano are some of the cars that they have managed to make them go quick. Just around the time the JTP was being developed the brand also showcased a sportscar with great potential and a new brand called TAMO. The RaceMo was the first car to be showcased under that brand. 1: Green LightBased on the IMPACT design philosophy, the Tiago set on to becoming a very successful model in the Tata Motors lineup in 2016. It was a fresh product from the brand in a very long time and instantly became desirable amongst a younger, more vibrant consumer. Traditionally for the brand, the customer base wasn’t the youth, but people who wanted something frugal and indigenous. The design and chassis of this car, later went on to becoming a potential donor to the performance model. What made the Tiago a popular product was its tasteful style and form that looks unoffensive from almost every angle; such was the design. ![]() While the JTP was being worked on by J Anand to make it faster, Pratap Bose and his team was tasked to make it look tastefully sporty. Such was the power of this transformation that could still pass off as a sleeper, unless you have a keen eye. The initial sketches and drawings of the JTP would make any car aficionado sit up and take notice. The concept car featured a Silver paint finish, with cross-drilled ventilated discs in the front. On the inside, the car was showcased with Leather seats, monochrome Harman infotainment, and perforated leather gearknob. Those were the only things that didn't make it to the production car when launched. Everything else that was showcased stayed when it finally made it to production. 2: Slow CornerShowcased at the Auto Expo 2018 and slated to launch later the same year, the Tiago and Tigor JTP concept cars sure re-instilled the excitement for the car. The car sure looked sporty but wasn't loud or offensive to look at every day. The start of this holy partnership sure made heads turn and showcased what JTP intended to do. Create a car that can pose as a daily driver and access additional fun when needed. This set out to do what VW did with the GTI, Mercedes with the AMG, and Fiat with the Abarth. ![]() The launch of the Tiago and Tigor JTP in Red and White sure generated a lot of anticipation and excitement, but it was a slow corner before the cars finally were made available to the public. 3: Flowing CornerThe ones who got their hands on this phenomenal machine found it hard to express their experience in words. This also generated interest in folks across the country that had been deprived of a hatchback that can do what this promised. But from the time the Media drove it till it hit the showrooms was a long wait. This drove the interest down as fast it had driven it up amongst the ones who had been following the car from its early inception. People who love cars that go fast would want it to be out on the road soon. But for those who waited, were in for a pleasant surprise. What was described by the ones who had the privilege to experience the thrill this hatch had to offer, was indeed true and in some instances better. ![]() This car with a limited run, but unlimited potential proved that sometimes it takes time to make what's good even better than the best. The slow corner was soon to pick up the paces with the flowing corner that followed next. 4: Hairpin CornerWhat started with a launch control at the start line, found itself struggling at the hairpin corner. Post the media drives there was a brief silence, it was just like a Turbo lag that felt rather long. The initial enthusiasm of the JTP Sales was dialed back, delays in registration due to a new JV not being registered with the RTO on time, delays in deliveries, limited access to the JTP given the exclusive 32 outlets in major cities made this car difficult to be accessible. ![]() This took a while to be ironed out and very few were left to pursue this product. But the car was no slouch, it could go faster than any other hatchback in its class around any bends. It sure was made for winding roads and that’s where its true characteristics wait to shine. 5: Final Pit StopA car that had immense potential ended up becoming a unicorn in the car world. As cars expected to be greener and more frugal, JTP ran out of gas on the final corner owing to catastrophic situations with the advent of BSVI norms and EV transition. The COVID19 pandemic only sealed the fate of what could have become an icon in its own right. The journey lasted just one lap and JTP pulled itself into the pits. It is often said that it is not how long you live, but well you have lived it. This sure was short but showed what can be achieved when enthusiasts work with passion. ![]() The sun may have set on the JTP, but it sure made a mark on the ones who embraced it. A car to behold that is the rarest and most exclusive tata yet. Though this was a tagline for the Vauxhall in the 1980’s, it sure is apt when it comes to this car. Once Driven, Forever Smitten. 6: SideLights• A total of 215 Tiago and Tigor JTPs combined were ever sold. This not only makes it the most exciting hatchback of the decade, but also extremely Exclusive. • MRF went through almost 7 iterations to make the perfect Tires for the JTP. The final car that rolled out came with Apollo Tires. • Rather than using only a racetrack to test the car, bad roads was also used to test what was bolted together. • The Bolt and Zest were first developed by this Joint Venture. • A total of 150 bespoke parts separate the JTP from the donor car i.e. Tiago/Tigor. • Parts or Panels that were bespoke to JTP have a small circular JTP Sticker on them. This sticker is visible on the wheels on the outside, rest are hidden inside and hopefully will be discovered when the car is opened in the future. • The Service centre has this car coded as Tiago Sport and not Tiago JTP. • There are 4 JTP badges on the car, but a total of 9 places has JTP inscribed on the car. • The car showcased at the auto expo had cross drilled Disc Brakes in the front and Leather upholstery. • The test car driven by J Anand didn’t have a Rev Limiter. ![]() ![]() 7: About the CarsThe cars came equipped with a 1199cc, 1.2L Turbocharged Petrol 3 cylinder engine, this was compliant with BS IV at the time. This engine was called the REVOTRON engine that was developed by Tata Motors in-house. This engine did duty in the Nexon with a lower state of tune. It produced a Max Power of 83.37kW (114PS) @ 5000 RPM and Max Torque of 150Nm @ 2000-4000 RPM. The suspension was tweaked and drove on Independent McPherson in the front and Twist beam with coil springs mounted on hydraulic Shock absorbers at the rear. It ran on Bespoke 185/60 R15 tyres made by Apollo. This suspension setup was stiffer than the car it was based on and drove a bit lower off the ground too. In the two year production run the JTP twins underwent few updates that were to keep up with the expectations of the buyers. In 2018 the Tiago JTP came with a Harman Infotainment system which featured a 5 inch colour touch screen but no AppleCarPlay or Android Auto. This was then replaced by a larger 7 inch touch screen that featured Apple Car Play and Android Auto, but continued to have the Manual AC. The final version came with the Auto AC and continued with the 7' updated touch screen. The very last models in 2020 came with a digital instrument cluster replacing the sporty analog dials. ![]() 8: JTP FanBoysThere is a small but an ever so enthusiastic group that not only loves the JTP but cars in general. The passion in the group ranges from being in the Auto Industry, collecting scale models, gamers and anything else that reeks cars. There is no set agenda to meet all in the group given that are spread far and wide in the country. ![]() But, there is a WhatsApp group where enthusiasm, maintenance tricks, tips and other car related topics are discussed. A common trait that bonds all JTP owners is their yearning for a car more than just a commuter. ![]() ![]() While the ownership experience has been a mixed bag for some, everyone agrees unanimously that JTP never fails to deliver on its promise. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My driving experience and ownership thoughtThis car has a temperament, its like the person you love with its flaws and perks. Nothing in life is perfect, and it should never be. It is raw, it is what cars should be like, when you drive, it should move, not be dead steady. Some like the sterile joy of perfection, and this will never please them. I thoroughly enjoy this car, and I like it when people drive this and are blown away by what a Indica maker can do. This car is my first new car, and is very special because it is rare. I knew what I was getting into when I got this car, so I will say I did my Risk Assessment. Personally, for me dealing with Tata Motors hasn’t been as scary as it was made to sound. I know everything shared on social media is one side of the story and the perspective and context can be distorted. I have had to explain to them what JTP is and how it is different, understand that JTP was not always intended to be sold to all states and regions, so there has to be that consideration. Yes, the guys at tata motors sometimes take offense that you know more than them, but I don’t let that bother me because at the end I need my car looked after the way the Owners Manual states. In the last 6 years of owning this car, I have been left stranded on the road twice, once when the Starter Motor had a sticky solenoid that blows the fuse and second was when one particular hosepipe burst. Other than that, the car has kept on going strength to strength, yes it makes me nervous what if I get stranded again, but just focusing on that is going to ruin the joy this car has to offer. This car has what I need from it: Fun, Power, Tasteful looks, Rarity and a common Desi brand. ![]() ![]() |

Your thread is on our homepage today. This is really the one that "got away" for me...in terms of test-drives. I don't remember driving the Tiago JTP media car, but am happy to enjoy the car vicariously through such ownership posts. Your Tiago JTP looks super hot with the white + red highlights, sporty bits from JTP and the perfect number-plate. Perfect garage companion in the Thar too! |

| Re: My Tata Tiago JTP Turbo Petrol | A Tribute to Jayem's Tata that performed Nice review for your JTP. It reminds me of the day I first saw it on Fasbeam's youtube channel and was absolutely in love with the design and the engine. Knowing that only 200 examples were made, I think you should consider keeping it for life. I have a question. Is the 1.2L engine in the JTP feel any different than the BS-6 iteration when it comes to power delivery? |
