Steer, this is indeed tragic. I suspect that sudden cooling caused by water coming into contact with a hot block caused this?

The engine was NOT submerged. We were driving through water that was just above ankle height! In fact I could open the door and walk out quite comfortably to hook up the tow rope.

THe water was ICY cold, though - my feet were freezing. Thats probably what caused the block to crack. Hot engine + Cold water = broken block.

We're trying to get hold of a salvaged engine from Sharjah - this is what the Chevy dealer recommended too because the cost of a new engine is probably more than the value of the car in the 2nd hand market.

Put in a salvaged engine and sell the car off, unless I get a really good engine.

Hey,

Just read this thread. Damn thats bad news. Picking up a used block from the scrap yards seems to be your best option for now.

Wont that kill the resale value? But, i guess options are limited.

Bad news indeed; very sorry.

But a cracked block is something I only ever saw in case of actual freezing of the coolant, and that back in the days before sealed systems meant that one might even get away with a winter of forgetting to check the anti-freeze.

Steer, just wondering..If you do manage to get a good engine, and have everything up & running as it was earlier, would be just fine to keep the car & use it? If you sell the car, you'll probably not lose much if the car is almost back to its original state. Eitherways, its more important to be able to find a good engine.
Hope things work out just fine!

Ankle length water and the engine's gone? That's really tough luck bro. Hope the salvaged engine is decent enough (why lose more money on resale when you could drive this around if possible).
