Re: Quick Guide to KM24 Toll Plaza (Delhi-Gurgaon border)

Yesterday there was complete chaos on expressway. I was caught in the jam for both times of the day. It was all due to that 1 Rupee hike and the collectors were not able to do return change to commuters fast. Many commuters also were not aware of this hike so this also created chaotic situation causing traffic snarls on the e-way. The NHAI should have put up notice boards on E-way to notify about the hike.

Any other BHPian used that route yesterday?

Re: Quick Guide to KM24 Toll Plaza (Delhi-Gurgaon border)

Ridiculous it is. How can they expect more than 1 lakh motorist that pass everyday to have Rs 1 change. I was stuck in a jam that stretched 3 kms and thats at 11:00 AM!
I burned more than Rs 100 worth of fuel because some nincompoop which is at the helm of affairs at NHAI which gave the go ahead for the increase.

Re: Quick Guide to KM24 Toll Plaza (Delhi-Gurgaon border)

Just came back. It was super smooth when going from Delhi to GGN at 1pm. In fact, I found am empty lane.

On my way back at 2.15 pm, there were about 10 cars in front of me in the tag lane. Cleared in about 2 min.

Re: Quick Guide to KM24 Toll Plaza (Delhi-Gurgaon border)

I am fed up of jams during peak hours at toll plaza. Why they (e-way management) charge 21 rupee if they can not manage traffic at peak hours? I am really fed up with them.

Smart Tag (Online Toll Tax), Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway

'Smart tag', an electronic device the size of a computer mouse which is installed in the windscreen behind the rear view mirror of your vehicle. It is charged with the denomination of your choice and has the capability of interacting with sensors placed at the toll gates. Which means that all you have to do is to slow down to 20 Km/hr (you don't have to stop) near the toll gates, the sensor at the gates interact with your Smart Tag, the transaction is recorded and the toll deducted, you hear a confirmation beep inside your car and you're off. All of this takes less than a second and is extremely convenient to commuters and the best way to do away with waiting periods at the toll gates. Smart tag works like a debit card, it has no expiry and you can use it till you keep re-charging the amount in your account. Designated lanes for Smart Tag holders have been created to ensure a seamless drive through.

Further Information: Delhi Gurgaon Expressway

The tag card can be refilled just like a pre-paid card online via different portals !

Not sure how if the Delhi guys are using this and if this has helped them in terms of saving time on toll plaza's ?

Re: Smart Tag (Online Toll Tax), Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway

The smart tag is a nice thing to have.
Its good for some hours, but unfortunately, those are the ones when you dont actually have to use the toll booth.
At the peak office hours of comings, and goings, there is NO distinction of a tag or cash lane.
Its a melee.
A free circus witnessed by circus animals sitting in their multiple-lacs worth rinks.
It is awesome, a sight to behold!!
The russians dont hold a candle to us.
Let me demonstrate:
The green lines are average paths of vehicles with tags.
The red lines are cash paying people.

Size: 706.3 KB

Now these four are at least a lil bit moral, in that after all the shenanigans, they still headed to the correct tag, or cash lane respectively.
A mojority will not do that, or are just caught in the "bhed-chaal", and have no option.
what happens?
EVERYDAY, without fail:

oh gripe, oh gripe.
Sorry, in other words, not a lot of time saving going on for us tagged users.
faced both situations, since one car has the tag, and the other does not.

Re: Smart Tag (Online Toll Tax), Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway

Good in concept, flawed in execution. Because till date, the Toll Plaza has not been able to effectively enforce Segregation of Cash Paying Vehicles into Cash Paying Lanes. This means that we have Cash Paying Vehicles choking up the Automated Lanes and the benefit cannot be realized.
In all honesty, I am myself an offender in this regard, and my rationale is that I act on the Herd philosophy. My innate desire is to stick to the correct lane, but when I see 100's of cars abusing and saving time, I say to myself, "What the Heck!".

Re: Smart Tag (Online Toll Tax), Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway

Mayank, with this new technology they have mentioned to have a separate queue for smart tag users, so isnt there actually a separate queue ? (you mentioned in peak hours theres no distinction) Aint there any local police to monitor this ? Like anyone found without a smart tag device in the smart tag lane should be fined, etc ?

Lane discipline is another animal to tackle. But cant govt enforce this technology ? so that all lanes are with the sensors. Wont that help ?

Re: Smart Tag (Online Toll Tax), Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway

@Dar3devil:
Half the lanes are designated as tag only.
There's huge signboards above them.
But by the time you comprehend what queue you are in, you have no option left.

About 30-40 metres from the boom, there are partitions, such that only one car can get in.
At the entry to this lane, there are about 3 rows of cars jostling to get in.
So much time and mental energy is wasted just trying to budge in.

occasionally, there is sensibility when everyone is in single file, but suddenly, there will be a cab which will just swish by in between the queues, and soon, the idiocy-fallout occurs, and bam, back to business!

Local police do come on sometimes(ive seen a few in about 3 years of usage).
what they do is, look for a tinted window/a smoking driver/ a broken number plate.
That solves the problem.
which one, is debatable.

The concessionnaire is even greater still.
a logistic dream they created, when they raised the toll from rs. 20, to rs. 21!!
amazing!!

You really should come down sometime and experience the lunacy firsthand.

Re: Smart Tag (Online Toll Tax), Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway

Possible solution : About 200m from the actual toll gates, install a couple of gates for the smart card users. Once authenticated and toll deducted, let them continue in contolled lanes with hard dividers between these lanes and the regular lanes to avoid cross movement. These dedicated lanes can get direct passthrough at the main toll gates.

Advance signage indicating automated toll lanes will allow users to turnoff much sooner rather than causing the chaos at the toll gates.
If one forgets to take these lanes, one can still pay cash at the regular gates.
