I dont know why but i have heard so many people say this.
Thats because lemon and green chillis are hung outside your door/house to ward off evil spirits. So if a lemon is thrown on the street, it is because it has 'absorbed' the evil spirit and hence served its purpose. Whosoever comes in contact with it will now contract that evil spirit. Thats why you are not supposed to step on it.

If you hold ur breath for 5 min, the next thing you will be doing is taking a ride in the ambulance you just saw.

the fact is the rich are too superstitious, especially those in the power play(our fellow politicians) and top business people. They follow it to any level and make all kinds of modifications for success. The idea of these superstitions are to actually make the rich and powerful spend and induce fear in them too. it sometimes work the other way round too

Infact it would be interesting to list what superstition which neta (politician) followed

Have a look under the heading " Don’t wait for your car to warm up".

Err... do not take this is bad taste. I once visited the snake park at Parassinikadavu (near Kannur), and the guide there was speaking of what to do if different snakes bit a human. This statement was made while describing the King cobra, in a very dramatic fashion. :(

At this time one is supposed to be working/studying. So if one sleeps he loses the money/education. And hence 'Lakshmi' goes away. Just imagine what will happen to a businessman sleeping at 6 instead of conducting business?

f women cry, the house will never prosper
I think this is probably because if women folk keep crying and whining how are the men supposed to keep motivation to work? Hence you won't be able to prosper.

Here are some superstition I encountered in the the west

1) People say 'God Bless You' everytime you sneeze. For some reason I am totally annoyed by this.

2) There is no 13th floor here . I stay on the 17th floor but actually I don't, its 16th. So it really used to bother me earlier here.

3) And what's with all this touch wood thing?

4) The whole blowing out the candles on your b'day cake with a single blow = your wishes get granted.

5) And if you see a falling star you wish something and its supposed to come true. I just wish that the falling star does not fall on somebody's head.

I am sure there are more, am just not aware of them.

One of the High Courts has no 13th court. when some smart alec filed a writ against this, the court numbering was changed from 1 - 27 to 1A, 2A etc - where the number corresponds to the floor and A to the wing in which the court room is situated. So 1st floor has court 1A to 1D, etc.

Which High court??

Hint:- a TBHP mini meet took place near it on 17th.

Anyone heard of these superstitious guidelines (office related) which I dutifully follow:

1) When you set an alarm for 6 AM and your not out of bed till 8:30 AM, it's not a good day to go to work.
2) When you step out of your home and you look up to see a teeny tiny speck of cloud, why take a risk? You might get caught in a rainstorm, stay at home.
3) If your breakfast turns out to be surprisingly sumptous and you over-eat, stay at home, you'll anyway lose productive time at work running to the loo.
4) When you start your car and the first song you listen to on the radio/CD/iPod is 'Smoke on the Water' or 'Highway to Hell', get out immediately and get back to bed as fast as possible. No one wants to start the day on a wrong note, right.
And lastly, when there you know your manager is eagerly waiting to fire you for what you did the previous day, well, legend has it that your well advised to stay put at home. Afterall, you have to live another day.

Another one. Throw a coin in the river, when you cross it.
The logic behind this in ancient age, when the coins were made of copper and we know that copper makes water cleaner, people used to do it but now coins are made of some other material (Do not know exactly what), so it doesn't make any sense to follow this anymore.
I do not do it.
