re: Indian Railways website (www.irctc.co.in) EDIT: IR resumes linen supply in select trains

Tried booking a Tatkal ticket from Pune to Mumbai. There were more than 60 tickets available in the two trains each. It took me one hour to get till payment stage and by that time waiting was more than 15.

Will take a bus instead.

No railway refund for non-travellers from Mar 01, 2014

No railway refund for non-travellers from Mar 01, 2014
Quote:
NAGPUR: From March 1, passengers who do not undertake journey after booking tickets will not be paid any refund.

Refund will also not be paid to those who have booked tickets as a part of a group and decide not to travel for any reason.

The new rules come into effect after the railways modified its scheme on grant of refund from public reservation system (PRS) on cancellation of tickets.

.....

Earlier, if the ticket was presented for cancellation up to two hours after the actual departure of the train irrespective of distance, the cancellation charges were 50% of the fare subject to a minimum of the cancellation charge referred.

Does this mean that if we cancel a ticket we won't be getting any money back?

I think this is targeting cancellations after departure.

No. The linked article is not very clear, but what I could gather is that this applies for tickets brought in for cancellation after departure of train. As of today, you could cancel tickets upto 2 hours after departure of train and get back 50% or so, which won't be any longer possible.

+1. From what I understand, ONLY cancellations after departure are void. I believe that's called TDR.

re: Indian Railways website (www.irctc.co.in) EDIT: IR resumes linen supply in select trains

I used Airtel Money to book five railway tickets on Saturday morning, for a journey from Ernakulam to Palakkad on the Trivandrum-New Delhi Kerala Express.

It was a sudden plan and around 7:30 AM, I saw that the tickets were surprisingly available to travel the same day (non tatkal). Decided to book using my Airtel Money account from my phone. I was done by around 7:40 AM.

Pros:

1. No additional charges, just paid the ticket fare and the IRCTC service tax.

2. You don't even need an internet connection for this, so no need to login to IRCTC website at all. The booking experience was great!!

Cons:

1. Tickets can only be booked under the General and Ladies quotas. No tatkal bookings can be made using this.

2. No ticket can be booked between 07:50 AM and 12:00 PM.

3. You cannot choose your berths. They will be randomly allotted.

4. In Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains, you cannot choose your food preference.

Overall, good option if you are not bothered about which berth you get, but the limitations are far too many.

A new lite version is available for booking tickets during tatkal time zone.

What has changed?
Absolutely Nothing. I tried logging in at it did not login even after 30 minutes. Some others may be lucky with this.

Not that I have booked a ticket, but just for the heck of trying it out, did so last month. I was able to login and pretty much go the whole hog.

Certain Observations:
1. Internet Explorer seemed faster
2. Log in at 9:57 or 9:58
3. Railways have started an e-wallet scheme use it to save time
4. Lastly - Pray to Dear God!

Smart Move : IRCTC introduces e-wallet
Dumb Move : e-wallet cannot be used during the Tatkal booking window

Are you sure about this one?

From what I understand is that e-wallet cannot be topped up or begun during the period but you can definitely use it (I have not booked a train ticket in year or so - so can't confirm) If what you say is true then its rather useless.

re: Indian Railways website (www.irctc.co.in) EDIT: IR resumes linen supply in select trains

What happens to a RAC ticket in case of no-show ?
Can I still go for 50% refund ? Or is it full refund (less the processing charges) ?
