School for 'Advanced Driving'

Our newspapers are filled with stories of horrendous crashes on the highways. Isn't it time we had a school where people were taught to handle the fancy wheels available today? After all, just 12-15 years ago the Indian automotive scene had few cars capable of delivering the power and speed that commonly most offer today. And highways are getting better by the day.

Cities with motorsports culture or race tracks might/should be having such facility.

There should be a school which teaches people the basics of:
1) Highway driving
2) High - speed driving/maneuvering (esp. in terms of taking turns at high speeds)
3) What to do when you are driving at high speed, and you find water/oil on the road, or there is sand/gravel on road and you have to brake on it!
4) For terrain driving, how to handle the vehicle in slush
5) The most important - How to drive in heavy traffic!

IMO most of these should be taught in driving school.

Why advanced driving and why only highway driving? What is the condition of traffic on city roads? I have a very cool temperament, but even I get bugged with the antics of other road users here in Bombay, which I daresay is much more disciplined than some other cities. Lane cutting without indication, stopping without indication, breaking traffic signals and laws are so commonplace, I feel stupid waiting at red lights on my morning drive to office, as the whole world whizzes past fancy free.

It is necessary for driving tests to be authentic, and not just eyewash. I had a licence issued from Calcutta. As it was expiring, I was told renewing it from Bombay would be difficult. I should therefore go for a new licence from Bombay. I went ahead and applied through a driving school. The test was scheduled a month or so later. I drove to the RTO office in Andheri, and waited with the group from my driving school and a million others. I had to queue up and put a thumb impression on a register and that was it!

Someone came up to me and said I would get my licence in a couple of days. My test? I asked. Not necessary, I was told. I drive with that licence now. Got without driving at the test.

I am sure there are many who have got licences in this manner and are going round endangering life and property.

So, we need schools for driving before we go advanced.

Maruti was supposed to Launch its Driving School in Major cities..

Would like to re-learn something (or everything) from them.

There is a Maruti Driving school in Delhi and NCR. The problem with them though is that you have to go there to learn. Its not like the neighborhood school with pick and drop facility.
Now if I can't drive, then its a pain for me to reach the school isn't it ?

Chennai, Coimbatore...what about the rest? Isn't race track training a little too specialised? Highway driving is another ball game.

therein lies the problem. Our schools don't teach, they're more oriented towards delivering licences as a solution. I know of many that merely facilitate this, hence the quality of drivers we have on our roads. Bangalore is a Hell-spot today. I guess there's such a dirth of drivers for the cabs and call centre vans that they are whistling them in from the nearby towns and villages- drivers who just barely know how to drive, forget about the finer points or road etiquette for that matter. If you do not renew a licence after its period is over, it lapses. So, my Calcutta licence has lapsed. So, I have only one licence now.

I am glad that I hit this thread.

I have been driving in Mumbai for more than 15 years now and I must say, touch wood, without an incident other than minor motorcycle nudges etc.

I am quite aware of now the driving school is getting a sham when it comes to learning reall road skills. Both technical as in rules etc and skills as in road craft. My son is now all of 18 and I started teaching him myself. I felt that this would be better than a driving school and I intend to use one only for the purpose of interfacing with bureaucracy.

My question is, 'Is there any good book that gives the Indian law and Indian skills required?'

there is a road book by Dr. Paschricha got mine free of cost from indiacar.com but then this was 5 yrs back,i think now we have to buy it.

One can always enroll in driving schools to hone their skills and pass with flying colours. But how about the other jokers on the road? Who is going to teach them, even the basics?

It is the attitude and the aptitude which needs a drastic change as far as we(in India) are concerned. We have no driving hassles when we drive on foreign roads. We donot even litter or spit on them! Why??

Police doesnot challan buses, because they claim that the bus drivers are rowdy. They donot challan tractor trolleys(overloaded with husk, occupying two lanes) on highways, because they claim that they are poor people and cannot afford the fine.

Police convoys hooting loud sirens are never in the speed limit. Suppose they are not covered under any act??

They target people whom they think they can get money from. (Families, executives, etc).

These are the people who required to be sent to some school for teaching basics/advance of driving!
