Re: It's raining in Bangalore!!

Left ITPL at around 5:45PM. It was not raining there that time however very cloudy. Returned via Varthur, Gunjur, Mullur, Sarjapura road till IIM.

Saw couple of trees uprooted on road and looked to me like heavy rain after varthur may be 30 min before it stopped raining.

Re: It's raining in Bangalore!!

Ok I have a question for Bangaloreans. I have been staying here for 7 years now and consider myself one too.

Coming to the question/s.
  • Why is there such highlevel of rain induced panic in this city?
  • Employees stop working and hurry home?
  • No one believes in signals when it is raining? Even driving up the wrong side on main streets.
  • Everyone gets on the roads to go god knows where?
There is a huge frenzy as if war has broken out and everyone needs to get out of the place as soon as possible.

If the above is due to the clogged roads and other issues, I still don't get how hurrying through will get rid of the problem.

I come from the west of India (West Indian LOL!!) and such rain is a normal phenomenon in our parts. But over the last seven years here I have seen this to be the same. The rain is as heavy or as bad as otherwise.

Re: It's raining in Bangalore!!

well, i think its the get home before it rains phenomenon. however, people do get caught in rain and that's when me first, no me first phenomenon comes into play!

i wonder what would Bangaloreans do if they were subjected to rains which happen in Kerala (rains day and night, that too heavy). the whole of Bangalore will be underwater

i've been in Bangalore for 13yrs and haven't figured it out yet. lemme know if you do - maybe we could write a whitepaper on it

I was caught recently in a thuderstorm and it scared the wits out of me. I was driving on old aiport road and the road resembled a war zone with dead wood and small/medium branches of trees falling all over the place.

I was caught in Cambridge layout in a water logged zone and believe it was a panic situation all around.

Could have avoided, if have driven before the rain hitting and destination is no other place than sweet home!

Cheers,

Exactly my point. Why venture out in such scary situations? Stay put where you are. If it caught you unawares its a different matter.

But here everyone hurries out for first signs of rain and then since everyone else thought exactly the same. Everyone is stuck and then it comes crashing down scaring the wits out of everyone. Adding to the mayhem.

Back in Goa if it rained really that bad it was expected for everyone to be late. From schools to offices.

But the trying to beat the rain phenomenon is only seen here.

Re: It's raining in Bangalore!!

I guess it is the psychological effect that affects Bangaloreans the most. In the past, there is always a huge traffic jam in most city routes whenever there is heavy rain. I work near Embassy golf links in inner ring road and we had seen traffic piled up all the way from Ejipura signal to Domlur on both sides when it rains heavily. Also note that this is a regular feature almost everyday between 6.30PM to 8.30PM.

So people like me have a psychological aversion to face it and tend to leave office immediately when it starts raining in the evenings. Yep, I was one among the people who was frantically riding in the rain to reach home yesterday also.
