re: The IPL Thread (Fantasy game league details on pg 238)

IPL not liable to tax, it's sport promotion - BCCI wins the battle against IT Dept

Our country could have benefited from extra money and BCCI wouldn't have felt any pinch.

re: The IPL Thread (Fantasy game league details on pg 238)

Below is the list of retained players. Player had the final say if they wanted to be retained. No prizes for guessing Warner opted out. Shreyas Iyer, Rashid Khan and KL Rahul. Pandya brothers maybe heading to Ahmedabad team makes alot of marketing sense.

Venkatesh Iyer over Shubman Gill shows alot of faith on Iyer. Hope he continues to do well.

CSK: Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali
KKR: Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer
SRH: Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, Umran Malik
MI: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, Suryakumar Yadav
RCB: Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Siraj
DC: Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje
RR: Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal
PBKS: Mayank Agarwal, Arshdeep Singh

TATA to replace Vivo as the Title Sponsor for the IPL.

Quote:
The Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Brijesh Patel on Tuesday confirmed that TATA will replace VIVO as the main sponsor for the upcoming edition of the tournament.
"Yes, TATA will replace Vivo as the title sponsor," Patel told ANI.
Vivo still has two years left in its sponsorship deal with the league and as a result, during this period, Tata will remain the main sponsor.

Well good to hear TATA is the title sponsor, expect some special edition around the corner for Harrier Safari or nexon.

Having the BLACKBIRD(Creta killer) displayed would have really helped them here with the advertising.

Let’s wait and watch.

re: The IPL Thread (Fantasy game league details on pg 238)

If, like me, you've always wondered about the numbers and if it made sense for companies to bid for IPL franchises, here's some info:

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/s...add-up-1286649

Got me thinking, with player salaries such a large component of the expenditure, perhaps the time is right for a 'Moneyball' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moneyball) sort of approach to picking a team of (relatively) unknown players for a small budget. A team based on stats that can punch above their weight. Might make for an interesting exercise.

"By re-evaluating their strategy in this way, the 2002 Athletics, with approximately $44 million in salary, were competitive with larger market teams such as the New York Yankees, who spent over $125 million in payroll that season. Because of its smaller budget, Oakland had to find players undervalued by the market, and their system has proven itself thus far. The approach brought the A's to the playoffs in 2002 and 2003."

Wasn't it already executed by Shane Warne and Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural IPL? Now that even the uncapped players are being sold for huge sum, it may not be possible to do it.

Rajasthan Royals tried this in the first edition and since then no one has succeeded. The RR owner even authored a book in 2021 which brought about some comments

Quote:
“Rajasthan always makes me laugh. They are the one team that’s talk about ‘Moneyball’ more than anyone. They have written a book! I mean I know a lot about them because they have written a book with Simon Hughes… you know, how the IPL works and running a franchise, it’s a great read but you kind of look at the book and think ‘This is a great read but you haven’t won since the first year but how are you telling everyone how to do it?” said Vaughan in a Cricbuzz video.

“If it’s so easy and so obvious how to run it and produce ‘Moneyball’, pick players and use data and stats, surely you should be more competitive! Surely you should win more games of cricket (chuckles). They’re brilliant at talking but not very good at playing the game,” he added.

As per the buzz, Shreyas Iyer is set to become the most expensive player in IPL history! Apparently he's specifically looking for a leadership role & a few franchises are also on the lookout for the same.

As per Cricinfo, Lucknow franchise laps up KL Rahul and he will be the captain. Along with him, Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi are also set to join the team.

Not exactly IPL but Unmukt Chand has become the first Indian player to play in the Big Bash League and will be turning out for Melbourne Renegades. Quite a turnaround ever since he left India and moved to United States for better opportunities. Let’s hope he gets his due in the league.

re: The IPL Thread (Fantasy game league details on pg 238)

Surprising that no posts on IPL auctions yet on this page. There has been strange strategy by Mumbai Indians, I feel, as they have only 8 players now and sufficient purse left for the day two and still not going for anyone on day two till now as well. The surprise for the Day two has been Liam Livingstone for Rs.11.50 crore to Punjab Kings.

The teams Lucknow Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals seem well stacked after Day one. Chennai as usual went for their former players except for Du Plessis and Suresh Raina. It will be interesting if someone laps up Raina on Day 2 of the auctions.

Surprising bid on Day one was for Nicolas Pooram for ₹10.75 crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Also, the Indian fast bowlers went for unprecedented amounts and Indian spinners on the hand, which were teams’ favourite in the past, have seen their stocks fall. Kuldeep Yadav went for ₹2.00 crore to Delhi Capitals while Chahal went for ₹6.50 crore to Rajasthan Royals. Ravi Ashwin too went for somewhat underwhelming ₹5.00 crore to Rajasthan Royals.

As expected, Ishan Kishan went for ₹15.25 crore making him the highest price player for this auction till now, Chahal went for a whopping ₹14.00 crore. These two players went to Mumbai Indians and CSK, who are not known to splurge so much on one players. Shreyas Iyer garnered ₹12.25 crore to KKR.

The full list of players sold on Day one is below:

Jason Roy for 2cr is an absolute steal! Couldn't understand Riyan Parag fetching a decent sum from the same franchisee for whom he has repeatedly failed.

What are the celebrity kids doing on the KKR table? The cameras keep focusing them every once a while. You can see all three kids sitting there full of nervousness and trying to understand what’s going on around them. Given a choice, they’ll scoot out from the room.

They are doing the same thing as Shahrukh, Juhi Chawla, Priety Zinta, Shilpa Shetty and Nita Ambani did in early years. They might seem completely out of place in such a setting but they are the investors running the show, so who is going to stop them.

It is IPL my friend where cricket is secondary, entertainment is primary.
