They will.
Only if the Ranji encounters too offer them the adrenaline rush, the gambling avenues and the celebrity parade that IPL brings with it.
These days, sports viewership, especially among the youth, is more a product of media frenzy than the result of actual interest or knowledge about the game. Remove Dream 11 and its cousins from the scene, and you will surely witness a fall in the fan following of IPL. In the days of yore - say, in the early 2000s - students used to wager paltry sums on the results of ODIs. Today, I have seen first hand the ruining of lives of hundreds caught in the quagmire of IPL betting and related online gambling. A very promising acquaintance even ended up taking his own life.
It is a sad truth that our lives - individual and social - is increasingly being shaped and controlled by media narratives. In the instant case, had the media been less sensational, and had our netas been a tad restrained in beating their own drums using social media, the tragedy could surely have been averted. * * *
Occasions when Karnataka had previously won the Ranji trophy had scarcely elicited a response from the political elite. Apart from the customary compliments, we hardly saw any steps of encouragement from the state government. That none of the Karnataka players of repute have found employment (honorary) in the government/public sector of the state is a testament to the treatment that is meted out to our champions.
My heartfelt condolences to the families of the departed souls. I have seen, from close quarters, the father of one of the victims: a promising young man (an engineer) on the threshold of his wedding. The vacuum that the youngster's sudden departure has created is unimaginable. The condition of the other ten families couldn't be much different.
A coterie of individuals and organisations clearly have blood on their hands. The sooner they are brought to book, the better. |
