Great that we can talk to people who have actually played the game .

As I see it, a century ago, game called cricket was shaping up. The batsmen in the game were required to satisfy 2 conditions:
1. Not to get out.
2. Make runs.

So a set of techniques were practiced which will give greater chance for batsmen to achieve these 2 objectives.

There were coaches who taught these techniques to young players. Anything outside these techniques were frowned upon, because that increased the chances of a batsman getting and hence affect his ability to score runs.

Can a batsman not follow these techniques and still score runs and not get out? Yes. There are many: classic example is Sehwag - who has score 2 triple hundreds in Test Cricket and enjoys the company of Bradman, Hammond & Lara. He might get one more in the next Test series and go beyond the greatest .

IMO, a batsman's objective is the score runs and not get out. He may or he may not follow the techniques prescribed by his coach.
