This is not Internet in usual terms. Its grid computing. Its more like distributed computing.
However, the data is routed using optics which makes data speeds really fast. I don't see anything new as far as Internet is concerned.
According the article, internet was invented at CERN. Nope, it was invented by DARPA in the U.S (yes Al Gore also !!). Tim-Berner Lee invented the web.
Grid Computing was tried by Google, Internet users were requested to download a certain software that would use the end-user pc for certain google s/w operations.
This idea bombed as trust-worthiness of the processing machine was under question. I would be really glad if this could be applied to Internet but this would take a very longggg time.
