Adi, Content Writing and Technical Writing is similar but different. TW are more focused on creating online help like that ones you see in MS Products and manuals. They are focused towards creating documentation for applications.

Content Writer are more content centric they write content for websites, brochures etc. They are tool oriented.

Cross training is always possible but is time consuming as TW are more focused at writing within a framework like adhering to stanradrs etc where as Content Writers are little creative in nature.

Hi Aditya,

Like MBRam said it is kinda same but different- technical writing. Content writers' do try to get into Technical writing but very few make it through.

Technical writing is about online help, user manuals/guides, installation guides, proposals (in some organisations), client training, product training, and the like. A technical writer has to understand the full product, functionality, end result, etc.

The job may get monotonous at times, as the person has to document everything from the end-users' perspective.

Content writing is about gathering information for a website, brochure, etc and tagging it on to websites. Content writers' are need not have complete product-functionality knowledge as they may not get in to the intricacies of the product unlike a Technical writer. A creative content writer may not want to be a technical writer.

I wish I was able to give you a clear picture in a nutshell!

I've got a chance to work for IBM as Messaging Lead in Pune. Negotiations are still happening & they say that it is a Band 7 Opening.
