bringing the topic back on track to something more appetizing-

on mom's request (its her birthday) lunched today at Kamat Jowar Bakhri restaurant in the Ramakrishna theater complex.

it specializes in the marathwada-north karnataka special Jowar Roti thaalis with the traditional curries, served on banana leaf. amazing, wholesome, healthy, tasty food - all for 90/- per head!!!

apart from the oh-so-soft Jowar rotis, the side dishes comprised of sprouts, green salad (cucumber, carrot, methi leaves), raitha, besan pitla, a brinjal curry, a radish curry (with the greens), a bean seed curry, papad, buttermilk, curd. steamed rice is also available but i didnt bother - just gorged on those rotis. at every table there were also containers of spicy peanut powder and lime pickle.

those who love something other than the usual stuff available in other joints should visit this place.

the only pain is that this restaurant is at the end of the Ramakrishane theater complex and your car has to crawl through frenzied crowd of movie goers (saw a group with the Ghajini cut, come to see Ghajini!) and black ticket sellers.

OK, I searched for "Coco's" and "Cocos" in this thread and got nothing and I really surprised at it. Went to Coco's opposite KBR Park (above Shikar) last night. My manager had told me that this place has been improved of late, so thought I should check it out. And boy oh boy, what a treat it was. Everything was perfect.

First, they had this guy named Krishna who was playing both the acoustic guitar and mouth organ (Bob Dylan style) and belting out popular country and retro rock songs in acoustic style. He was damn good and the that soft rhytmic guitar strums just added to the crispness of a chilly winter night (first time it was really feeling like winter in Hyderabad). This place has a very chilled out casual feel to it. Is set on the roof top and is ideal for friends to hang out. Has hukkas, smoking is allowed and assortment of cocktails along with other regular drinks. And it specialises in continental food. Everything that we ordered was perfectly done.

We had ordered Tandoori Chicken, Dragon Chicken, Prawn Lasagna, Chicken Shashlik with Rice and Chicken Steak sizzler. They were all delicious and the meat was very tender. And I had a brilliant Sangria drink to wash them down with. Quantity was very generous (the size of my chicken steak really tested me out!), service was great (took a little while for some items but then it was peak time and this place is meant for you to just chill out and not get bothered about time anyway) and the music was top-notch (later on, this guy Krish, started playing Sufi-folk based Hindi numbers like "Allah ke Bande", "Chappa-chappa chakha chale", "Piya re". This after scores of Beatles, Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan numbers).

All in all, it was a fantabulous dining out experience and I'm going there again for sure. Go there with friends with time in hand. Place stays open till 12 a.m. Krishna comes to play in the weekends and other days, a group of violinists will give you company.

@CtrlAltDel, i agree with you the Kannadiga Thali of Jowar Roti is absolutely delicious, when i used to dine there, it used to be Rs.65.

And, my home was 100 meters from this theatre, so fond memories of Ramakrishna ( i still go there quite often), Jowahar Thai, Kamat hotel and did you know there is an Andhra Thali in the ground floor where they serve this Jowar Roti Thali?

@Devnull, i been to Coco's over a year ago and was not too impressed with either their food, service. When we were there on my mom's birthday, the power went off and we had eaten our dinner in dark. The guitar player was there even then.

I use to frequent tex-mex ( since it was the only place serving mexican food those days) and sundowner for some beer on way home.

You are right about Sanjeev Kapoor. But surprisingly he closed down a restaurant near Yo China, opp Hyd Central. It was a small joint where one could get decents thali meals--the business lunch types.

Yo China does not belong to Sanjiv Kapoor. its a chain that opens franchises across the country (like Pizza Corner etc). btw, there is a Yo China outlet in Trimulgiri near the factory outlets.

personally i dont prefer the taste of the "chinese" food in Yo China. i usually call it AyYo China!

Coco's rocks. Its really about the ambience. Dined there often in Mar-Apr. Not too great food, decent beverages (can vouch for the non-alc variety) but overall good ambience - few places like that in hyd.

Venu was not saying Yo China is Sanjeev's restuarant. If you read carefully, he says near to Yo China

Ok..so last moment changes yesterday made me go to sahib singh sultan instead of yellow chilli as planned earlier.

have been to sahib singh before and i just love the place and the food!

though when the bill comes and if its not a dutch kind of scenario(like the one yesterday ,i had to treat my sister and my bro in law) it gives a big dent on your wallet..

but out and out one of the best places to eat in hyd...
