Yup saw the coverage. Heavy tolls in indonesia about 2000 i think. Mild tremors in Malaysia too. But no tsunami as of yet except the small one on coco islands.

Sri Lanka and India have both withdrawn the Tsunami alert warnings. But it is said there might be a tsunami due to the after shocks.

It is possible for a quake to trigger tsunami hours after also. Sometimes the quake puts so much of stress on the plates that they might slip hours after the quake causing tsunamis.

Was in Goa next to the beach when it happened.
Just came back.
There was a red alert sent from indonesia to all coasts uptil Goa and even the sea was very rough.
Pretty scary though.
It happened atabout 9.30 PM and measured 8.7 on the richter scale though.

Some more info on the latest earthquake - got it from times of india i think. Not sure which paper it was

For an earthquake to cause a tsunami, there are three major factors

1. The intensity - should be a pretty big one
2. There should be a movement of plates
3. The quake should have a shallow focus that is the slip should occur within 10kms from the surface of the sea bed

the 28th march quake had the first two factors but it happened 36 kms under the surface of the sea bed. That is why it didnt cause any tsunami.

That was a very close call. Also the epicentre of this quake was 120-130 kms away from the last quake's epicentre. So this quake is not a after shock but a separate one.
