Very commendable decision. Astra has been my favorite car since childhood days. I would like to pick it up, but will need to get some permissions in the first place. I hope you would be willing to give it away to a Hyderabadi.

BTW Where do you stay ?

Thank you. I see threads related to people restoring really old cars here. So, I thought why not hand it over to someone who can use it as a learning project.

It's very much possible. Electrical issues most probably. I don't know cars much and I don't have close friends who are into this business/domain. All my connections know only computers which means they are good for nothing in the real world. And that includes me also.

Thanks Archer. I don't mind giving it to anyone who is interested in restoring this or even using it as a learning project. I stay in Gachibowli. You are number 4 in the queue. Our customer care execute will get back to you soon, till then you can listen to some really irritating music

That is a great gesture to help the car get back and running and even a greater one when you are ready to let go of it for nothing.
You are something man.

Anyways after owning an Opel astra for good 3 yrs from 2005 till 2008 indeed a well maintained secondhand from Coimbatore I would not dare lay my hands restoring this amazing car.
It served us well, rock solid on the highway, great power and comfortable seats.
Sad part: Parts were very difficult to get. Cost of maintain the car went above the cost for what it was bought. Became very unreliable at hardly 80k on the odo, gave terrible single digit mileage on petrol. Every month it used to spend few days at the mechanic shop with some new mechanical failure.

Finally we gave it away for < 1 lakh in 2008
Hope whom ever is taking the responsibility is aware and has the time, money and heart for it. All the best folks. Let the Astra roar back to life.

I understand that 'giving away' means expecting nothing in return. But is there anyway some public thanks(apart from the thanks button)/rating can be added to the givers by the recipients?

Almost same experience. When you know that you are inside a metal enclosure, you just can't help but laugh at the Japanese/Korean plastics all around. But then you also know that they will be doing the same when you are stranded a few kilometers down the road

I had almost same feelings when it was still running. But the main thought that kept me from selling it was, "I have a metal enclosure which looks lovely, sounds like a sports car and can ferry five people around with moderate reliability. No point in selling it for 50-60K."

Buddy, You can hand it over to Nikhil, as he's available in the city and ready to take a look. Though I'm interested, sad to say that there are a lot of strings attached to get approvals and add to that my occasional travel to Hyd.

Is the car still available. I would like to lay hands on such a wonderful machine. I have done restoration of a Maruti 800. It is documented here.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/diy-do...00-budget.html

I also restored a flood damaged Hyundai Getz. It is documented here.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...ndai-getz.html

I made a video series on how to restore Maruti 800. I would love to make a video series on restoration of a car that is close to modern ones. For maruti, there were no fake wooden panels or covering over A-pillar etc and hence restoring it was a piece of cake. This on the other hand would be far more challenging. With the injector cleaning, ECU tuning

Is the car still with you?
