Got that done! Thanks.

Now, we wait and see if the tooth that has come up already, goes into position magically.

Dentists here - please help! What are your opinions on teeth whitening? I can understand scaling and polishing is ok but even my dentist suggested not going for a whitening procedure. Is it harmful? Cannot google these days either - there is for and against articles for anything online these days!

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Doctors, many years back, I suffered from meralgia parasthetica. I had googled my thigh pain at that time & I had found the website for a neurologist where he had described a test to confirm a diagnosis for meralgia parasthetica. The test was something like bend your legs at some angle (or straighten, I forgot) & then you will either feel more pain or less pain (again, I forgot). It was very very accurate in my case. I then went to a doctor & he also also confirmed the diagnosis (though he did not do that test on me). There was some treatment & I didn't have pain for some years. Now I have a similar pain, but since it's a few years, I am unable to figure out if it's the same pain I had before or something different. I am planning to go to a doctor next week (I am travelling this week), but I wanted to do this test - but I googled & I am unable to find any reference of this test (I remember even last time, that info was available on only one site).

Is there any doctor here who knows of this test? It doesn't seem to be a very common test.

Yeah, that re-appearance of that pain is of meralgia parasthetica. That is common. Kindly do not try to do that "test" yourself. It will be like pulling the gear shift from backseat while closing the eyes - stuffs inside may get broken. Driver will pull-push to check neutral gear
Please continue the non-surgical treatment for 2 weeks which I am describing next, then please find a senior Orthopaedic Surgeon and describe him these were done. You may start Aspirin 150mg twice a day after food (Ecosprin brand name). Aspirin will do the right, not only work as pain killer. Wear loose dress including loose undergarment, be careful with seatbelt. Exercises written here, do them http://www.ipcphysicaltherapy.com/Me...esthetica.aspx Standard information written here - http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?...rpwebid=20D9E1 There is nothing to fear. It is a chronic condition, you need to understand and adjust.

Hypothyroidism induced skin problem

I have a thyroid disorder (hypothyroidism). It remained un-diagnosed for a long time. I used to feel lethargic and dull, also I had lost my appetite and was gaining weight rapidly. I initially felt that it was just because of my lifestyle changes after marriage (reduced exercise and increased food intake) and sedentary nature of work.

About 1 and 1/2 year back, I developed skin rashes which was diagnosed by the dermatologist as chronic urticaria. He advised several blood tests, out of which Vitamin D deficiency was found along with very high levels of TSH (6.7) IIRC.

The dermatologists (I have consulted 2 of them till now, quite reputed ones) insist that the skin condition is because of thyroid and it will gradually get sorted once I start taking the treatment for thyroid. They also gave me a 20 day dose of anti-allergic medicines. The rashes disappear as long as I am taking the medicine, but return when the tablets are stopped.

The general physicians (I have consulted 3 of them) insist that there is no relation between thyroid and skin rashes. They feel that my skin problem is because of some allergy. They even advised me to avoid chicken, eggs, cheese, cabbage, brinjal, lady-finger (okra) - basically anything that causes allergies. I find this hard to believe because I have been eating these things all my life without any problem.

Currently, I am taking thyroxine supplement which has brought my TSH under the acceptable limits. The skin rashes have also reduced, but in frequency of occurrence and the intensity of itching. I also take anti-allergy tablet once in 3-4 days, when the rashes reappear. (Is it Ok to take anti-allergy tablets for long duration, does it have any side effects ?)

Please help me to identify the root cause of the problem and suggest the permanent solution, if any.

Rohan

@rohan_iitr: get an allergy test (skin prick method) done at a reputed diagnostic centre?

I used to take Montair FX (or Mon-Deslor) quite regularly along with Fluticasone spray for my supposedly allergic rhinitis. This was when my TSH was way off the charts. Once I started taking thyroine supplements as advised by me endocrinologist, the allergy sneeze bouts and sinus headaches vanished and I sneeze very rarely now. I'm not even taking the tablets nor the spray anymore. Even got myself tested for allergies and I scored negative.

My opinion is to take thyroiditis very seriously (since it affects pretty much everything) and stay in touch with a reputed endocrinologist. (My 2nd visit was 3 months later and my next visit is scheduled 6 months later). He'll likely advise you to take Vitamin D3, mecobalamin, multi-vitamins and calcium+folic acid supplements.

Thanks a lot. As you suggested, I will consult an endocrinologist.

Which endocrinologist are you consulting ?

Please give me reference to a good endocrinologist in South Bangalore.

I'm personally against whitening using bleach/laser/xyz

Teeth become more sensitive as per what my patients report (even though we do fluoride treatment, etc)

Nowadays i dissuade people even if they ask me for whitening (honestly, it's good money for me, very good). Only if they are in the film/modelling business or they need to be presentable all the time do i agree to their demands.

Plus, case selection is important. Why are your teeth discoloured? Are there existing front teeth fillings or caps, etc.

Additionally you must be sure patient follows up on post bleach instructions for atleast a week.

You get a laser bleach and then go have a road side paneer masala, and you will have red teeth for the rest of your life! Immediately after bleaching, the teeth get highly porous i recommend only a white diet for a few days.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

I have been through many experiment regarding dental issues. Tried whitening powder, gels, whitening procedure at dentist here and US.
Even after using Total paste or the best in the market I use to always have pain or other issues.

I love eating paan in India, an elderly person got me into this habit, Hyd Kali type, Seeing this someone suggested using black powder (Bytco brand)

After consistent use of three months, I saw the change.
1)Teeth have become stronger & whiter coz either charcoal or other chemicals which acts as a exfoliate agent.
2) Food decay or chemicals released by trapped food decay is effectively neutralized or cleared by these black powder.

My friends father who passed away at 85 few months back had perfect teeth till death. He used black powder daily and will often break & chew sugarcane by self even later in life. This also got me hooked on to black powder from last three year's.

Presently my one wisdom tooth filling had come out and the cavity touches the bare nerve. Rcc is planned but lack of appointment in my city also as I was moving. I have x ray and all requirements done except RCC. Last was empty stomach which got me dizzy & thrown out by dentist post anesthesia.

I am completely normal and just procrastinating the dental visit, I just make sure no food particle goes in the cavity if it does then it pains. You can imagine someone in a similar situation and the pain he may undergo daily but my teeth 's seems pretty strong and normal.

It may sound strange may be creepy, but that's my experience using black powder which was used widely in India till few decades back.

Like Homeopathy & it's believer and non believer, this is my experience with black powder.

Thanks for the reply Tejas! Yes, even I did not like the idea of teeth whitening but just wanted to know if there was any ill effects of doing so.

Most people in the generation who are in their 80s have good teeth due to lack of refined sugars in their diet most of their lives. Plus genetics plays an important role as well.
Also where they are brought up and the amount of fluoride in the water is also a factor.

I was at a village last weekend, and due to either mosquito bites or wet muddy feet, my feet have itching rashes even after 2-3 days. It is reddened and sometimes very scratchy. Is there anything I can apply to soothe it?

Whenever I have faced the same situation as yours,I used calamine lotion. Twice a day.

How about using baking soda mixed with salt and applying it on teeth. i have done it to my teeth to remove coffee stains and it worked. (I'm not an expert)
