I appreciate the thread started by Tejas. You are doing a great job towards busting some of the myths associated with dentistry. Actually, "qualified dentist" in India is a rather recent phenomena. Even 30/40 years ago we had mostly quacks looking after our teeth who knew nothing about the science of dentistry. And because of that lot of negative myths got created about dentistry. These quacks are still alive and kicking in the rural areas - not only harming teeth and general oral hygeine but freely prescribing antibiotics when none is necessary and making entire populations resistant to them.
Good initiative. By the way, ultimatechamp in Kolkata is an orthopaedic. I think an FRCS.

Hi,
I am a general dentist. Nice to see this thread. Count on me too for any free medical/dental camps in Kerala.

Hi Dr.Tejas,
I really appreciate your opening this new thread, I am sure we can educate friends in Team-bhp about oral health and remove the fears and myths many of them have.
Way to go Dr.Tejas!

At the cost of sounding absurd, I have a few questions.

1) My front lower teeth are not in good condition from the inside region. There is some sort of decay. What is the solution ? I am right now trying new toothpastes, etc, but to no effect. I am not planning to visit dentist now. Are the tree stems available good for cleaning ?
This is getting somewhat serious for me.

I got scaling done long time back. Even though my wife is a dentist, I seldom make a visit to the chair. Infact proper brushing technique goes a long way.

Coming back to scaling, its not painful, though there is some bleeding. the procedure costs around 150-200rs(Though obviously it was free for me)

If you know it's epilepsy, you can directly head towards neurologist. It occurs because of unexplained spikes in brain waves. there are medications given for years and slowly weaned off (or increased, if it doesn't work). but from my own observation, a lot of times it just follows it's own course regardless of the treatment. Lack of sleep triggers it very quickly.

if you know one is prone to eplileptic attacks, it's best to keep him/her away from hazardous situations like fire, water bodies, driving etc. it mostly comes with no warning to the patient. some get milder form where they are conscious but the limbs are out of control.

once a attack occurs, the best you can do is to keep the patient's head at a higher level to prevent choking, put a spoon or something so the jaws don't cut the tongue, and hope it gets over soon.

sorry for the unsolicited advice, I am not a doctor, but have been in close contact with the patients.

All fits are not due to Epilepsy. So see a neurologist instead of asking advice on an internet forum.
Medical advice dished out on forums is usually useless, because doctors are not magicians, and unless you are examined and tested, nothing is sure.

Hey nice thread. Appreciate it.

The question i always wanted to ask - whats the best toothpaste out there?

If there is no specific answer, on what basis should we pick up a toothpaste - age, condition of teeth, ingredients, etc.

Are the ayurvedic toothpastes any good over the checmical loaded ones?

Sorry if the questions are naive but i always pick up Vicco and have been happy with it just because its respected product.

Hi SohailPistawala, epilepsy is basically a disorder of the central nervous system, wherein neurons(nerve cells) in the brain start firing in an irregular rhythm, resulting in loss or disturbance in consciousness with or without characteristic body movements.

They arise from a specific focus and based on which part of the body they represent they can cause disturbance in that specific area eg just jerks of one limb.some can start at the focus and later become generalised ie involving the whole brain which leads to the classical fits you see in movies!!the whole body gets involved.following the fits is a period of confusion lasting few minutes after which person returns to normal

You are right to some extent-some epilepsies present with primarily behavioural abnormalities due to which patients present first to a psychiatrist.some can present as unprovoked anger outbursts.an eeg usually can differentiate else an mri or ct can find the cause

I didnt understand what you meant by chronic epilepsy-can you be more specific?i can help you with whatever knowledge i have.for more details guess you have to contact a neurologist like others have suggested!!

NO it is not painful at all and NO it will not make your teeth weak. Scaling helps clean plaque and tartar from teeth which results in cleaner teeth and stronger gums, thereby strengthening the teeth attachment with the gums.

Are you sure it's decay? If it is yellowish brown in color, it may just be tartar and scaling will remove it. There are no magic toothpastes, just use a good branded one. Please avoid using stems, because if a splinter gets stuck in your gums, it will cause an abscess.

Disbalanced or crooked teeth will not result in them getting discoloured unless they hinder brushing. I have patients who at age 45 are ungoing orthodontic treatment. So there's no age not to start.
Go for scaling and polishing. Bleach only if extreme discoloration.

I prefer go go with toothpastes whose ingredients have scientific published reports supporting their efficacy. Till date i have found only two indian pastes which come close: Pepsodent G and colgate total. Many people don't like the tastes of the above two and i suggest atleast use the above at night and any other gel in the morning for "freshness".
I personally don't believe in ayurvedic pastes.

Thanks to everyone for their appreciation.
