There is a separate thread for alternate medicine - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/shifti...ptions-13.html

The current thread is only for conventional medicine.
My apologies.

Like I mentioned - someone directed me to this thread.

I am sorry.

Opthalmologits / Opticians ?

Hope this post catches the eye of an opthalmologist

I wanted to know the effect of a wrong pupillary distance on the eyes. If my eyes have a PD of 70mm, but the PD on my glasses is set to say 72 or 74 mm, then what happens ?

2nd Q:
I have two pairs of glasses, both plastic, same power. The older one is very comfortable, and I hardly notice it when I wear it. The newer & more expensive one is a rim-less one, but I can feel a difference. The eyes feel a little strained. Why should this be ? I have tried to ask the opticians, but they say that both pairs are the same. (They did not check the PD, and hence the prev question).

I have used this rim-less pair for a long time (without switching over to my older pair), yet the moment I came back to my old pair, they felt so comfortable.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hello all,

Have a question regarding medicines. Tell me what happens if I am supposed to take a medicine thrice a day i.e BLD and miss it for lunch? Am I suppose to take a double dose at dinner or just miss that dose and carry on taking the precribed dose for dinner?

The medicine in question here is Augmentin and another one Topdase or something. I am supposed to be taking Augmentin for 14 days for BLD after an operation and I missed a dose.

Regards

Chennai BHPians,

Any Ortho Specialists on this forum or recommendations for any one in Chennai ?

I have been having Low Back Pain for some time and it's getting worse day by day.

I am on the lookout for some one who is experienced, friendly, who will not rip me off and who will not use me as a subject.

Inputs Requested

Low back pain is becoming a very common problem.
Can you give me your age, height and weight?

Spinal pain is something which shouldn't be taken lightly.
Do you have any numbness inner thigh, fingers, toes.

Get yourself a MRI of the spine at bharath scan (quick tip on discount : say you referring yourself so ask them to give the doctors discount to yourself. You will save good 1000+ )

Then visit an orthopedic surgeon.
Or repost your scan reports and i will let you know what needs to be done next.

Not progressive lenses, but plain lenses
Only short sight, @ -2.75
Age: 40
Have used glasses for the better part of my life, and the power has been steady for a long time.
I am on annual routine checks with the opthalmologists.

This particular pair of glasses was made 6 yrs back, and it has always felt that way. I have not felt any discomfort after switching back to the older pair.

I just got another pair (my 3rd one) as a replacement for the older pair, and this one also does not feel different (feels normal).

For plain lenses (unifocals) the small PD mismatch wouldn't matter for small powers. For higher powers above 4 or 5 Dioptres it will make a difference.

For Progressive lenses, it is desirable for the PD to be matching.

Is the discomfort that you are experiencing occur when you are reading, and at your workstation or even when you are outdoors and mainly require distance visual acuity?

@slicvic, thanks for that. One point answered.

But for higher diopters, how will it affect the eye ? Curious.

Regarding the discomfort, it's consistent. And I dont know if I should call it discomfort but the glasses do feel different. When I say discomfort, it is in comparison to the the older pair which feels seamless. The pair in question does not cause strain in the eyes, but it definitely does not feel seamless like the other one.

Dentist is recommending root canal treatment for my mom.
There are two options.
Metal cap and ceramic cap. Cosmetics are not a priority. But longevity is. Is it true that if ceramic thingy is not baked properly then it will crack?

And BHPians. Can you recommend someone good in and around HSR layout area?
I want to take a second opinion before the I take a plunge.

Will TTK Medical policy cover this?

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hello docs

Need some help.

Bit of history: I got a funny muffled feeling in one of my ears, and went to see an ENT specialist 5 days ago. He said I had inflammation in my ears, and after googling (we all do that, don't we), I thought it's Otitis Media. Among the medicines he prescribed is a Xylometazoline nasal solution.

I googled on that too, and found out it's a nasal decongestant. I assumed he prescribed it because my nose was a bit stuffy that time, and didn't take it as 1)I found out about the rebound nasal congestion problem and 2)I already had an azelastine spray that was prescribed by some other chest doctor to clear up my nose.

So, the other medication didn't work and I went to see him again - he told me that the Xylometazoline spray was important and not to skip it (I didn't tell him I wasn't taking it, though).

My question is - Could this medicine somehow help my ear? Should I be taking it? Thanks.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

^Actually its for the Eustachian tube that equalizes the pressure across the ear drum(TM) with the atmospheric pressure!

It connects your middle ear to nasopharynx(opens in the nasal cavity)

Blockage of that can cause stuffiness, muffled sounds due to restricted movt. of tm and ear bones

Decongestants help in unblocking the eustachian tube by inducing vasoconstriction thereby reducing inflammation(oedema)!

Note that its normal position is closed, but intermittently it lets air in for equalization of pressure!

Actions like, swallowing, chewing gum, valsalva maneuver(take a deep breath and exhale against a closed mouth and pinched nose) help in opening the tube!
