re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Imran, if you are donating tomorrow, then would you be cycling tomorrow ? I guess the break should be after donating ?

My wife says 1 day should be enough.

Now where are the (other) doctors?

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

My wife is suffering from severe tooth ache.Dentist advised her not to take any pain killer/anti-biotic as she is currently 3 months pregnant.
So as of now she is trying to manage with Dolo 650 and salt water gargle(as suggested by dentist).
But pain does not subside much with this and also how long and how frequent one can use Dolo?
Dentist could not properly diagonize on what is the main culprit for the pain. They simply told they cannot do anything as of now.
She is having a decay in her last teeth and also there is a gap between two teeths(lower jaw).
My wife says pain is because of the gap,i.e if any minute food particles get stuck.

She is suffering daily for almost a week and i am not sure on what to do.
Please provide some suggestions.

preexisting dental problems show up more during pregnancy because of hormonal changes and neglect to proper oral care. ask your wife to maintain proper oral hygiene with regular brushing, flossing and salt water rinses.
Regarding current problem, from What you have told, it seems she is having some infection in some tooth. She will need to take antibiotics only painkiller will not help. There are many antibiotics which are safe during pregnancy such as amoxicillin. Ask the doctor to take an RVG (RVG uses very low dose Xray) with a lead apron over your wives abdomen to diagnose the problem. The treatment can then be done in second trimester which is relatively safer. consult a better dentist. All the best

My cycle commute is 36 kms.
I am planning on donating some blood tomorrow.

Should I avoid cycling to work on Thursday and Friday.

Or is just a one day gap i.e. Thursday enough.
Being a donor multiple times, I have never felt any weakness or uneasiness in particular but yes its better to avoid cycling upto 24 hrs after donation and have some healthy meal that day.

Checking for an alternate medication is only symptomatic treatment, please get a complete check up done by a Physician who will take her complete medical history and will check if she has any symptoms of sleep deprivation like fatigue, weight loss/gain, etc.

For all we know it could be Sleep Apnea and it be diagnosed with a sleep study.

Waseem.

Hi I wanted to know about kinds of prosthesis available for fingers. One of my close relatives recently lost the distal phalanx of his index finger of right hand. the wound has since healed and now he called me up regarding the options available for prosthesis. Can anyone tell me about the same, types and costs involved?

As others have pointed out, lack of sleep could become a serious cause of concern. It is one of the symptoms for a lot of phsycartic disorders such as anxiety disorders, etc. Keep observing her for over a period.

In case she is getting stressed/disturbed by something, avoid that for her for some time.

Hope she gets well soon.

Hi rock18, I am a pharmacologist and let me tell you that many antibiotics are absolutely safe in pregnancy (E.g; Penicillins, Cephalosporins). Some of the antibiotics which are safe in pregnancy and is useful in dental conditions like gingivitis, caries and other oral infections is Amoxycillin 250-500mg three times daily. Dolo 650 is better avoided because USFDA has restricted the dose of Paracetamol to not more than 500mg/dose and/or not more than 2gm/day.

One more drug Metronidazole (Brand name Flagyl & others), which is frequently prescribed in such dental conditions, is better avoided in pregnancy because of the risk of causing harm to the fetus. Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask.

Edit: You can use 500mg Paracetamol up to four times daily.

There are custom made silicone finger prosthesis available which serve mainly a cosmetic purpose improving social presentation and hiding the deformity. It fits snugly like a glove over the finger. Osseointegrated prosthesis are also available but usually suited for the thumb or a more proximal loss of finger.
The cost is anywhere between 2000 to 10,000 rupees depending on the quality of the prosthesis (not the osseointegrated ones). Ottobock is one company which is available in all major cities, and is expensive of the lot. Maybe, a Plastic Surgeon from your place should help you with the options available over there.

You can ask your relative to visit a Prosthodontist. Altoght the main job of prosthodontist is related to teeth but finger , eye and ear prosthesis are also made by them. Though not many pvt. clinics are too interested , If you are in delhi, You can go to MAIDS. any Post graduate student in Prosthodontics should be more than happy to construct a finger prosthesis.

As of now pain is controlled,it comes all of a sudden and last for 3-4 days. Will visit another dentist(referred by fellow bhpian in my area) soon to take his advise regarding the antibiotics.

I am getting frequent cold/throat infection and most of them it lasts for atleast a week irrespective of the medicines.
In that one week, two days are very severe and i suffer a lot.

Is it advisable to take OTC tablets like coldact, vicks action 500,otrivin,etc?
Any advise on avoiding getting frequent cold and cough?
