Kanva has Executive health check up for 3000 rs .http://www.kanvadiagnostic.com/package2.htm . Is this good enough ?. It has TMT also .Is it needed ?

Jayadeva has it for 2500 Rs - http://www.jayadevacardiology.com/ma...th_chekup.html . The list not detailed .May be its related only to heart .

Cardiac master health check up will be done at New OPD costing Rupees 2,500/-(Two Thousand Five Hundred) only*. The package includes :
  • ECG
  • ECHO
  • X-RAY
  • TMT
  • COMPLETE HAEMOGRAM
  • BLOOD SUGAR
  • LIPID PROFILE
  • BLOOD UREA
  • S. CREATININE AND
  • URINE ROUTINE

Update : This was over a month back , visited Jayadeva for a complete heart checkup which included Treadmill test (which I specifically asked for ) . Got a " Excellent " in the report .

The threadmill test was quite exhaustive , ran for 15-20 minutes with increasing speeds and all the rig being attached to chest and abdomen . .There are 6-7 other tests apart from this one .

The hospital is clean and does everything fast .
Go on weekdays (like I did ) , weekends are too much rush .

This hospital is focused on heart only .They do basic blood tests . Will get a detailed blood tests later done at some where else.

Not a health matter, but...

Does anybody know where I can buy original-branded Swann Morton scalpel blades in Chennai? I want "No 26 non-sterile" (but I don't mind sterile ones!) blades. They come in a pack of five, but I'm happy to buy a box of 100 packs.

I have had my Swann Morton handle for almost forty years. It has a host of craft, DIY, etc, applications. Can't live without it!

Preferably somewhere between Royapettah and points south down ECR, but if I have to go to Parry's I will. I'd prefer a specific shop, though, to having to traipse around asking in lots of places.

- its recommended by docs just to make money as its expensive and they get large cut in it.true ?
- PENTAXIM works. Not sure about what is being given in the USA, but vaccination schedules in India and US are different.

- Not sure about the WHO approval.

- Easy Five does not have the same contents as Pentaxim. Easy Five has DTP+HiB+Hep B, whereas Pentaxim has DTap+HiB+IPV. So if you want to switch to Easy Five, you may want to give Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV) separately.

- Pentaxim is more expensive since it has DTap instead of regular DTP, which is more expensive to manufacture. And it is the Acellular Pertussis component which makes it less painful compared to regular DTP. And I suppose private practitioners make more profit selling the expensive vaccine. Choice should be yours!

I just had a reply from the India distributors in Mumbai: they do not have a retailer here, but may be able to supply direct. I've let them know my needs.

Being a paediatrician practicing since last decade, I would share a few points. It's true there were a few break thru pertussis in Australia and USA, the same hasn't been recorded in India. There are a few articles in respect to the same. Pentaxim has DTaP , the acellular pertussis component makes it expensive to manufacture , so also it's combined with injectable polio. In case you want to switch you should go for easy five/ comvac5 or pentavac with an injectable polio shot. And for the profit margin remains near about the same in either of the vaccines so it doesn't matter to the doctor which vaccine you take. What we explain in less pain and not painless...with pentaxim. So it's your choice between the two.

i only want to switch if its safe to switch and easy five is better.

what profit doctor is really not my concern just making sure he is recommending right one to us.

Thanks,

My response to this is as follows:

1. Everything can be proved right if taken in isolation.

2. Are saturated fat not required for proper functioning of the body? Of course they are. But they are not essential. Which means that body can synthesize de-novo cholesterol and not PUFA. Hence it is must for you to take PUFA to survive.

3. What is bad for the body? Sugar (Carbohydrates), Fat, Proteins, Vitamins and Minerals.

Everything is required in appropriate quantities to maintain an internal balance in the body called "HOMEOSTASIS". Any derangement is detrimental to one's existence.

4. What is a poison? There is no such thing as poison, only the dose makes a substance poison. If you take even water in excess of say 20 Liters a day you will die of severe Hyponatremia (low sodium in blood).

Arsenic which is a drug in Homoeopathy is poison in modern medicine. But the dose at which Homoeopaths give Arsenic is in trace quantities (negligible to cause any symptoms).

5. Biggest killer of human beings is this imbalance between food intake and lack of physical activity, along with such bad habits like excessive alcohol intake and smoking.

6. One of the documented and proven diets to reduce incidence of CHD and prolong life (longevity) in the world is Mediterranean Diet, which is rich in PUFA (from Fish and Olive oil) and less in saturated animal fat from red meat. (Less is not same as NO). There are innumerable clinical trials and metaanalysis which show least incidence of CHD (Coronary Heat Disease) among people consuming this diet.

7. A state where coconut oil is consumed rampantly as food is Kerala. The incidence of CHD is all time high, not because coconut oil is bad but because physical activity is correspondingly at an all time low. I hope you got the picture. There are infact studies to prove that coconut oil is good for health because it contains MCF (Medium Chain Fatty acids).

So if you were in charge of public health dept. of Kerala Government would you start a program which increases consumption of coconut oil is increase in physical activity and exercise. I would do the latter.

My 20 cents.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Thanks, that helps. What about vegetable oil, is that as bad as it is portrayed?

I remember my family (even extended) using coconut oil for everything until the early 80s. By late 80s, the switch to vegetable oil was complete. Lots of relatives in my grandma's generation lived to be 90+, despite being on coconut oil diet all their life. Recently my family switched back to coconut oil (after hearing similar stories), and yes we do exercise.

Samurai San, enjoy life to the fullest, exercise (both physical and mental) and try to keep yourself and the environment around you as stress free as possible.

Once I got a mail from a friend of mine (who is a pathologist), about longest living doctor in the world, a japanese. And according to him the secret of longevity is not what you eat but whether you are truly happy. People who are happy rarely will be obese. Never count calories.

May God give you more than the average japanese life span (with equally good quality of life).

Enjoy your coconut oil cooked recipes.

Thanks.

When I was in Japan for a week, I didn't see a single fat person during my entire stay. That would make Japanese the happiest people.

Recently I have been looking at health articles. Now I am in my mid-40s, have been exercising regularly since nearly 30 years. I rarely pop a pill and can't even name a family doctor if asked. But I am getting pressure from family to start having annual checkups, watch my diet, etc. Just because I have entered the 40s. Wife wants me to eat less meat, eat less eggs, cut the fat, etc.

Therefore, when the doctor in above video says eat meat, egg and fat as much as possible, I want to believe him. He says that the diet should contain 15% carbs, 15% proteins and 70% saturated fat. I don't know that guy, but I love the guy, at first sight.

As far as I know happiest people on earth were Nigerians but...

As for routine screening of diseases goes, for you (a person who is aged in the mid 40s, doesn't smoke, exercises regularly, had no 1st degree relative die of prostate cancer or sudden unexplained cardiac death below the age of 50 and consumes healthy diet) it is utter waste of money.

One more thing in India is we do not have evidence based screening recommendations of Indian population, the same way US and Canada have for their people.

Relevant link: http://www.uspreventiveservicestaskf...g/adultrec.htm

My personal recommendation for you is to get routine health checkup (not expensive lab tests) every 4-5 years or whenever you get symptoms of some chronic disease (Cardiovascular or Cancer), definitely not every year.

If you are interested please read about one more drawback of routine screening called "Lead Time Bias" from this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_time_bias

Hope it clears the air.

P.S: make sure your wife also reads this post and the wikipedia article on lead-time bias.

Thanks.

http://www.uspreventiveservicestaskf...g/adultrec.htm

They have an app as well - AHRQ ePSS -
You can input few of the required fields and receive advise on the screening you require. However, everything is based on American data.

What does this routine check up consist of? What all things will the doctor check / I should ask him to check?

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

I am into my late 30s, non-smoker, non-drinker. I fortunately have a comparatively stress-free life. But I do not exercise even a bit for various reasons. Lately, my stamina has been going down slowly but surely. My heartbeats increase a lot even after small sprints to catch the train or taking the stairs for 4-5 floors. In fact, after walking up the stairs for 5 floors, I almost had a blackout and my entire body was feeling very cold from inside. I was scared a bit. None of my family/relatives have had heart conditions or any other chronic ailment. I fear that this may be symptoms of a clogged heart (??) but I am just paranoid. Can this be just due to lack of exercise or any other activity?
