For some of us who have seen old people eating ghee etc into their old age, they do get paralytic strokes a lot often especially in villages.
I believe not having high BP is not the only indication of good health? so as everyone knows wholesome food with good physical activity is what could be saving some of these older but healthier people.

There are lots of oil mills around Dharmasthala that are now using cold press technique. Since I drive through that area regularly, I pick it up there. Check your local oil mill, see which technique they use.

You'll have to go with family history. My wife's great grand parents enjoyed 81 years of marriage eating like that. Finally, they passed away within 4 months of each other.

I suppose for a person hailing from the eastern parts of India, it is certainly a myth. Mustard oil has been used in the Bengali diet since God knows when, and the ancient people in their infinite wisdom would never have used the stuff if it was so detrimental to health as the Europeans make it out to be.

Ok - great. I have also been planning for an oil change for sometime - so I am going to try mustard oil next.

Rightly said. Being from NE India, all I can say is we use mustard oil as a sort of all purpose oil, for cooking, seasoning pickles, for treating cold infection and blocked nose, even for auto-cleaning of earwax.

Hi All,

I too want to have your opinion on something which I'm experiencing for the past 9 days.
I'm 33 years old and for the last 8 to 9 days, my stomach is a cause of concern to me. It has bulged up a lot & looks strange & weird. It's not like that, I didn't had a belly, in fact, I have a beer belly, but to an acceptable level. But for the last 8-9 days, my stomach has bulged up, full round up including the sides as well & it feels that, it contains a lot and lot of water. Whenevr I climb stairs or walk fast, or if I change my position while sleeping or sitting, it giving an impacting effect like a huge water ballon and while shifting position it feels that, I have something solid inside my stomach which is of my stomach shape & is shifting inside. I can't bend down, or move swiftly, The skin of my stomach is tight & shiny. If I push it with my hand to a side, it feels that, I'm pushing a bag full of something. It doesn't pain untill I shift my position and that to the feeling is of shifting a load, That's it.
I tried fasting also, but even during fasting I didn't felt hungry. I just drink moderate water. That not too much. I don't have gas issue as well. I feel very unconforatble while sitting, & have to change my sitting position within 10 min. When I wake up during morning, instaed of feeling fresh, I feel very verytired, Like I have run around 15 KM with a troubled chest. There is continous uneasiness in my chest. I'm not a regular drinker, but social one. Hence, this big bulging of my stomach is worrying me a lot. I can't stand longer due to this stomach. it creates such un uneasiness that, I start puffing.
Could anyone suggest on this physical condition.
Very anxiously looking for responses on this.

Hi dev,

From what symptoms you are describing, its best to consult a m.d. physician asap. The feeling of water in stomach may be due to ascites. But ascites can be due to several reasons, which are best decided on proper history and physical examination. I won't be able to tell you sitting here. Are you having any of the following symptoms associated: jaundice / change of bowel habit / fever ? There are far too many things too be asked. Thats why best to consult.

Do keep us updated,

Thanks for your response on this 'Simple_car'.
Except the 'Change in Bowel habits', I don't have any other syntoms mentioned by you. I will definitely consult a doctor today.
However, is it curable or some kind of a cancer?

Thanks again.

What would doctors here recommend as a brand? Also any experiences of what to look out for, would immensely help.

Thanks in advance.
i am a gastroenterologist at Max Hospital, Patparganj. i put esophageal stents regularly so i will answer your query.
1. SEMS stent is used as a palliative care (for only good quality of life) in advanced esophageal cancer (e.g.stage IIIb/IV). so if your pt is adv stage, he qualifies for the stent, if however he is stage 1-3a then he can be cured by combination of chemotherapy, radiotherapy +/- surgery.
2. there are several types of stent - majorly 2, one is branded - like Boston Scientific, Cook etc, they will cost u ~ 50-60K, second are chinese - they will cost u 20-35K.
anybody with advanced esophageal cancer will have survival of less than 6months.
so take a call depending on stage of disease and affordability.

get an ultrasound (whole abdomen) and consultant a gastroenterologist (specialist of abdominal diseases). abdominal distension can be due to water in belly (ascites), obstruction in intestines, paralytic ileus (gut not moving) etc. so take a call accordingly

Hello 'Simple_car' & drkunaldas,

Thanks for your reply on this.
I went for complete abdomen scanning (Ultrasound), & the somewhat results apart from my blood & urine (yet to be received) tests are:

Features are suggestive of -hepatomegaly. -ascitis. To be correlated clinically.
LIVER : Liver is enlarged in size, measuring around 15.4cms with uniform echopattern. No obvious focal intra-hepatic lesion detected. Intra-hepatic biliary radicals are not dilated.Portal vein is normal in calibre. GALL BLADDER : Gall bladder partially contracted.Common bile duct is not dilated. PANCREAS : Pancreas is normal in size and echopattern. SPLEEN : Spleen is normal in size & echopattern. KIDNEYS : Both kidneys are normal in position, size and outline. Cortico-medullary differentiation of both kidneys is maintained. Free fluid is detected in peritonel cavity. URINARY BLADDER : Urinary bladder is normal in wall thickness with clear contents. No significant intra or extraluminal mass seen. PROSTATE : Prostate is normal in size and echo-pattern.

It Ascitis curable? Is it fatal? I heard that, there is no cure at all for Ascitis & I have to go for liver transplant. This is the only way out. Please, please respond to me.

@Dev, for your immediate guidance - inputs from my wife, who is a doctor:

Quote:
It will be advisable to wait for the blood test reports, to see how much is the Bilirubin level/jaundice & other details.

Ascitis- can be caused by many causes, and cure will depend on the cause.

Suggest to not get alarmed. Correct diagnosis would be required before coming to any conclusion.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hello motorheads, I am kinda "suffering" from 2 problems which I will elaborate.

1) Since last few months, I have severe bouts of acidity and gas. The major reason being the oily, spicy hostel mess food. I have tried to alter my diet, by avoiding this food as much as possible. But still as soon as I eat, I start having this burning sensation and acidity. I drink almost 3-4 litres water a day and eat at regular intervals too. Sometimes the problem becomes too acute to even sleep. I tried taking ENO and Gelusil liquid, but now they are hardly helping.

2) Whenever I bend down and get back up, I have this almost excruciating pain in my head. This also happens otherwise frequently. It is almost like a lot of blood has suddenly rushed into my veins and want to blast out! The "pain" is for a very brief while, say 3-4 seconds and then it subsides on its own.

I am all of 24 yrs old!

Kindly help. I will be seeking the advice of a doctor soon. Can anyone point me to a good one in Hyderabad?
