Not a doctor - but why did you stop it? I wouldn't discontinue BP medication without doctor's advise.

Hypertension (High BP) is mostly symptomless. However, it can cause all kinds of problems like kidney damage, heart problems etc. By the time the symptoms appear some damage may already have been done.

Wanted to know if I really should continue with the tablet even if I don't have any conditions. I am fairly fit and do a few exercises like pushups at home. Are there any medicines in Ayurveda to control the BP? I just do not want to be dependent on tablets. Some help will be appreciated.
That is one of the worst and the most common things that patients do. If I sound harsh, please forgive me, but that is the truth.

There are a lot of complications due to hypertension and when they will strike, no doctor will be able to treat you to your satisfaction.

Hypertension is a silent killer. If your B.P. is hovering around 150-110 (I cannot comment since one has to keep a regular check), then you MUST keep it under control. And you must take tablets.
If you are not very keen on being dependent on tablets, then you will have to take a holistic approach to life. There is no escape. Your doc will be able to guide you better since he knows you much better. Even then, you cannot escape tablets initially.

Thanks,

Thanks carboy. I just felt that it may be an instantaneous case of high BP due to some mental stress. Also, all my earlier tests showed normal BP. No symptoms either. Hence, I thought that I could take regular BP checks and if it showed high, I might as well re-start the medicine.

Sachin In your interest I would suggest you to continue with your medicine until the doctor asks you to stop. As you say that your BP might be due to sudden stress which is highly possible but to avoid further complications continue and consult your doctor after one-two weeks .The doctor may continue the same dose for a month or may reduce or give a lower dosage medicine if he feels everything is normal but abruptly stopping a BP medicine is absolutely not advisable.

I was advised to take Calcirol (weekly) and E-Cod (daily) after MRI couldn't detect any muscle tear in my calf muscle but I would get frequent injuries (in calf or achilles tendon) whenever I started working out.

I recovered from the pain in my achilles tendon but didn't want to take the risk again so I currently take Calcirol weekly in milk and also plan on taking E-Cod.

What I wanted to check was 2 things -
1. Is it okay to be taking Vitamin D capsules because my understanding is that if there'd be excess of Vit D it would simply be flushed out of my body and cannot really harm my body.
2. With the quality of food products (specially veggies) available in the market, is it ok to be taking multivitamin capsules to bridge the vitamin nutrition gap? If yes, can someone suggest what kind of multivitamin capsules would be okay for a 28 yr old male and 28 yr old female.

1. Capsules are also fine, just make sure the dosing is right (consult the doc). The dosing for a male adult is 200 IU/day.
I think you are taking calcirol sachets? (i.e. you have to dissolve the powder and drink with milk/water). If that is the case, you will most likely be shifted to tablets later on. Another way for vit. D is injections. Consult your doc for clarifications. Different situations demand different measures.

Other sources for natural vit. D: herring, salmon, fortified dairy products, sardines, fish liver oils, mil, cheese, egg yolk, shrimp etc.

2. E cod is a combination vit. E. You must have been prescribed this for a purpose. Otherwise, for normal healthy adults with good and healthy dietary intake, multivitamin tablets are given under specific circumstances.

Thanks,

Not a doctor - but latest research says don't take vitamins and supplements unless necessary.

Please provide contacts of renowned dermatologists in and around Bangalore ( preferably Kormangla/BTM/whitefeild area). A bit urgent. Also do we have any dermatologists here? Please get back to me then, I need an advice. Thanks a lot

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hi friends need a help.
I recently moved to Pune and am looking for a good doctor.

I am borderline hypertensive with BP ocassionally ranging around 145/95. I am on the look out for a good cardiologist whome I can consult on a regular basis. My doc in delhi was very good and had kept me off the medicines till now stressing on diet control and lifestyle changes. But ever since I moved from Delhi both the things have suffered and I am worried the BP may shoot higher.

I also suffer from acid reflux and associated acidity issues. COuld anyone suggest a Gastro specialist too for consultation in Pune?

I stay in Baner.

Requesting for more info on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand,_f..._mouth_disease

My daughters pre-school is having an outbreak. Almost 80% of her class is infected. We have decided to not send her there for this week.

How contagious is this illness?
How to protect kids?

It's a pretty harmless infection in general. I would say it is fairly contagious (though not the most). There was an outbreak here in bombay recently as well.
The wiki article is fairly comprehensive. The EV-71 strain of the coxsackie virus is the neuro-virulent strain and the one to be a little more cautious about. It has a higher incidence of neurological manifestations. Recent trials in china have found that vaccination against this strain has given pretty good results. I am not sure whether the vaccine is available in India though, you should check with a paediatrician for this. But, this vaccine I am talking about is only effective for the EV-71 strain.

Isolation only. No way out. AFAIK, the incubation period is 1 week for this infection, and in theory, the isolation should be till 2 weeks (i.e. twice the incubation period) from the last reported case. However, I am no paediatrician and I can assure you that this is not a practical approach.
If your kid does get infected, just let the infection run its course (as is the case for all viral infections). Just supportive treatment is sufficient.

P.S. this particular virus is shed in the stools for weeks post infection, hence at least to me it doesn't make any sense on isolating for so long. I think your paediatrician will be a better guide.

Thanks a lot.

I am worried because I also have a 3 month old at home and don't know how he would react to this.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

My brother-in-law who is about 24years old has cataract in his eye. When he initially approached a doctor he had advised to not operate but to let the cataract grow over a period of 6 months and then operate. The doc suggested eye drops in the interim.

Last week, when I paid visit to his house, I noticed a grey-blue circle that had formed within the eyeball(or lens/iris - black circle). Everybody were horrified about this and they immediately took him to the same doctor who now suggests a surgery within a week.

What exactly could be done now? Are there any renowned surgeons in Chennai? Cataract at this age is surprising. All advised shall greatly help me advise him.
