Identify the cause of grinding: stress, improper dentistry, etc. Treat that to solve issue on a long term basis. Till then you will have to wear a custom night guard.

I tore my ACL (right knee) last Saturday, while playing football.

I cannot still seem to put pressure on it, so cannot walk without assistance.
The Dr. has advised surgery but once after a month.
Can I try to walk (on both feet) till the surgery?
Earlier attempts to walk on the day of the injury have not been successful. I just fell to the ground..

This is not about me, it just involves me...

On Saturday morning I woke up with stomach ache. I was slightly sick, but spent the next few hours coming and going from the toilet with diarrhoea. Had aches and pains all over, and slightly high temperature.

On Sunday, no more direct digestive problems, but cramp pains, and occasional pains in other muscles. Some fever. Spent a lot of time sleeping.

Today, the fever is gone, and I feel pretty much OK, but there is still occasional cramp pain in abdomen.

Now...

My step-daughter-in-law is likely to give birth tomorrow. Had it been today, I would certainly have quarantined myself and not gone anywhere near.

Tomorrow? With no symptoms apart from an occasional cramp for 24 hours? Is it safe for mum and babe if I go there? I'd avoid touchy-feely, and get a good antiseptic handwash there

@Thad, friendly advice from my wife, who's a doctor :

Possible Amoebiasis or E.coli food infection.

May take Tab. Cilplox-TZ BD for 3 days, continue if symptoms persist for another 3 days, Pantop- 20mg OD. Lot of fluids.

can go near mom & baby with precautions that you have already mentioned

While it may or may not be a good idea to use a hand sanitizer, it would be more important to wash your hands with water and soap nicely.
Hand sanitizers are suggested where water and soap may not be available. To be effective, hand sanitisers should have atleast 60% alcohol content.

Thanks, all... this is actually GC no 2! (and number 3 is due to the other stepchild in December).

Advice noted. My health is stable with just the occasional twinge and a bit of tiredness, temperature normal. It's been a drugless recovery so far, but recommendations noted with thanks in case of relapse.

As to the potential mum: labour is being induced, but it doesn't seem very willing to happen. We will go to hosp now, but it might be tomorrow before birth.

Mother and child are doing well.

As nothing seemed likely to happen until late night at least, half the family members went home awaiting a call. Within an hour of reaching, I heard "After short period of great pain, she's gone into labour now!" and before I got the car out on to the road, 15 minutes later, I heard, "The baby's out all ready!"

Pretty baby girl, mother rather wasted. Hey, who would do this to themselves? Think about it boys and girls!

Anyway, will see both again properly, tomorrow or next day.

Oh, and my stomach is open for business again: Butter Chicken Masala on the way home!

Thought-provoking read, that. Being just a fresh grad, I don't have the experience to comment on it, though.

All I can say from observing my teachers is that communicating well with patients is an art very few have - and these few have the biggest practices. The ones with the deepest knowledge or the best surgical skills are often not the patients' favourites.

Also, we must bear in mind that each patient is different. While some would want to know the true prognosis of their disease, many would just want to hear "everything is going to be fine". While some would like to have all treatment options put before them, and be given the right to choose what they think fits them best, many would want their doctor to make the choice on their behalf.

This article was written by a behavioural scientist. That's his job. Sadly mental health issues related to chronic disease or acute major injury is ignored in India for the most part. This is due to shame of 'mental illness' in our country. In the developed world, such a patient would ideally have a counselor and her family members too would be getting counseling to be good care givers. There would be rehab programs.

From the article it seems the woman is going through this alone. In India you would have 20 family members worrying about you and helping in any way they can.

Surgeons need to be blunt and non emotional while performing their duties .All successful surgeons have a certain "personality". I would want a surgeon who isn't thinking about implications of his surgery on the patients life in the OT. I would prefer a emotionally blunt professional whose every cut is precise and gives the best outcome .

Most people are not rational enough to take such decisions alone. Even Steve Jobs delayed his surgery so he could try out alternative medicine.

If yes then you most probably do not need to take daily vitamin supplements, you can cut down to 1 tab/cap every 2 or 3 days. The reason being vitamins A,D,E,& K (or fat soluble vitamins) are the only vitamins that are stored in the body for a longer duration, if taken too much can lead to toxicity. Vit B12 is also stored for a long time (but it is not fat soluble). Especially for vegetarians it is important to take Vit B12 supplements, because very little of it is stored in the liver, the entire body uses it, and most of it is recirculated through the bile system, and a certain fraction is always lost, leading to deficiency over time (mostly happens in years).

If for any reason you are a type of person who gets sick a lot, takes antacids, or does strenuous work, then it would be preferred to take daily supplements of vitamins.

Or you can take few vitamins that you prefer during certain occasions. i.e. when you get cold, bruising, or laceration, it would be good to take only vitamin C supplements (helps boost immunity and helps with healing of skin injuries). Vegetarians can take vitamin B12 only. People who don't drink milk enough can take Calcium supplements (especially women), but if you are prone to getting kidney stones, then calcium supplements should be avoided or taken 2/3 days apart with plenty of fluids. Best to consult with your doctor, but you don't necessarily need to take every single vitamin or mineral listed on the tablet or capsule.

Revital is a brand, can be expensive for some, so can be substituted for something similar available at the nearest pharmacy. But if you prefer revital you can stick to it and take one capsule every other day.

It is an amazing technology, but it is mostly used as learning/teaching tool and distant consultation. It should not be confused with robotic surgery, which is actually a doctor operating it from a distance or computer. In Augmented Reality the doctor can only use it to point out where to look and show what to use, basically a spectator. Some can actually do a surgery virtually to show what and how to do a particular procedure.
