Thanks for the advice. I've entered a black mark against Star accordingly.

I have seen this on Teleshopping Ads.
But I would always avoid any product sold on Teleshopping

Please visit an ENT specialist and most probably he would suggest something like Waxolve

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hi,

For Thryroid related issues (Hypothyroidism) we have been seeking doctor's consultation for a year now. TSH still tends to stay on the higher side. My suspicion is it is the food. From what the doctor said, if we can avoid cabbages and cucumbers it should do.
I am not overly worried but want to know more about it. I have done my fair share of internet surfing on the subject but I could not find very Indian specific material. I am not sure if the normal range for TSH is different based on age-group and the country we live in.
Any knowledge related to this will be helpful. Please let me know.

Is there any medicine on throat pain while swallowing? I have having these stabbing pains at each swallow for past 2 days. I tried TusQ-D and other lozenge, but the effect is very small, and very temporary. What should I take to soothe this?

Meher, please consult an ENT or a General Physician immediately. You seem to have a severe infection of the throat and might need an antibiotic. Self medication may worsen it.

However if you would like to take self medication and if you have no allergies to medicines, you could try:

Tab. Azithral 250 - 1 - 0 - 1 for three days.
Tab. Dolo 650 - SOS if there is fever.

Re: The Autism Thread

I really do wish that we could have a HIV thread here.
I can certainly contribute a lot to that.
Since the mid 1990s, the disease has become manageable with drugs and personally, I have seen people taking drugs for 10+ years and getting better all the time.
What is really disgusting is that our insurance companies (and Govt) still treat HIV as a pariah disease. The disclaimer clause has HIV and fortunately many doctors are willing to avoid mentioning it in the claim forms. They do notify the attending staff.

HIV is excluded but people do not manage their other chronic diseases well and get all sorts of complications which requires treatment. A diabetic or an overweight/obese person can claim angioplasty, any cancer. Not an HIV+ though even though with people on antiretrovirals (HIV+) can suffer some these diseases, which may not be related to the HIV disease itself.

You can be diabetic and get claim on all sorts of treatment/hospitalisation, but an HIV+ person has to pay for the entire cost of treatment. Totally disgusting and outrageous that nobody has done anything in India over the last 3 decades. Talk about discrimination and this should be on top of the list.

I have learnt at a high cost that picking ears or inserting buds or waxvac or cotton has a high cost and is definitely not recommended.

I have been suffering on and off from ear problems for many years and find that showing to an ENT is the cheapest and quickest. I have generic allergy and fungal problems off or on and so Xyzal-M is my constant companion.

For fungus, candibiotic works best in the short term but systemic/widespread fungus is best treated by an ENT who could prescribe antifungals. My ENT (Dr Raheja, Apollo) has advised me to permanently use ear plugs while bathing. apart from recurring fungal problems, in Oct 2010, I developed Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It was a wait and watch and it relapsed. Ultimately Epley maneuve cured it in April 2011 and I have been free of BPPV since then. Since then I have been using ear plugs while bathing but stopped them sometime back, but at a high cost as detailed below.

In March-Apr 2015, we got our house painted and by 20th April 2015 post one week of completion of paint/polish, I developed viral fever/allergy, which by end of April worsened into rhinitis, eustachian tube blockage/otitis media. Tynpanogram showed fluid in ear.

Since then, my course of treatment included antibiotics, antifungals (fluconazole 14 days at a go followed by one weekly for 4 weeks), nasonex, and physiomer (saline water). It got better by 25th May 2015, but worsened again with ear blockage. I could hear properly but when I spoke, my voice sounded muffled to me.

So my ENT on 1 June 2015 said to be patient and keep on with nasonex, candibiotic, fluconazole, and physiomer. He said that to wait for 2-3 months and if fluid still is a problem, they will insert a tube or whatever (Myringotomy). He said when my nasla (in Hindi) got cleared, everything else would become better.

Fortunately, things have got better from 7/8th June and ear blockage is much reduced. The biggest symptom of continuing ear blockage was nasal discharge which has been much less. With lesser production, ear is now becoming clearer. Previously, I would clear my nose but that continuing production of nasal fluid (nasla in Hindi) meant the problem did not go away.

Sorry for the detailed explanation of my problem, but bottomline is that ear is very sensitive and strong external devices should be used only in consultation with a good physician. Even in Apollo, Delhi; the quality of ENT physicians varies (though not by much). One should avoid using wax removers (soliwax/waxoyl) or nasivion/otrivin for a long period of time. If they do not bring relief after 3-4 days, best go to an ENT. soliwax/waxoyl can be allergic/abrasive and nasivion, etc (used beyond 3-4 days) can in fact aggravate the problem.

Very expensive? Well, yes. The products I have taken a look at are from 18,000 to over 30,000 per year. But probably not nearly as expensive as a heart attack!
One should ideally take insurance as quickly as possible, but in the 30-50s, the premium is usually wasted as no claim is taken. It makes a lot of difference from the late 50s/60s when all sorts of costly body part replacement procedures kick in. Just think of angio, knee replacement, etc for a start.

Yes not as expensive as a heart attack, but if you have no insurance, just a look at the bill could tip you over into the great beyond. In Delhi, usual inflation rate for hospitals/consultations is 10% per annum, and there is no connect with actual general inflation rate for other products/services. Same for schools. Oh, the laws of demand and supply.

I guess HIV is taken as preexisting disease. The same goes for congenital anomalies. Most of the health insurance policies do not accept congenital anomalies. Many of them do not manifest at birth and require expensive surgeries.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Even diabetes is a prexisting disease which leads to complications, hospitalisations, and insurance claims. Those are approved.

HIV claim denial has been prevalent from the 1980s when it led in >90% of cases to death. From 1996 with drugs and 100% adherence, it is now treatable (not curable) and it is criminal on part of IRDA/insurance companies/Govt. to deny claims to HIV+. AIDS has lost meaning (used to mean Cd4 <200). These days, even people with 0 cD4 (basically no T-cells o fighter cells) at treatment initiation have a very high chance of getting better with drugs.

If you talk to specialist docs in HIV and research, you will find that controlled HIV (with drugs and near perfect adherence and rare missed doses) leads to lesser problems and costs than controlled diabetes. That is, lesser complications and lesser lifestyle restrictions.

The point is that people can eat unhealthy stuff, and still claim insurance for angioplasty, cardiac surgery. These develop over time and progress, and so are pre-existing. Even cancer is preexisting and develops, and people can claim insurance if they are not HIV+.

Preexisting is a baloney: Assume that there are two people, one with HIV+ and one with diabetes. Both have the disease for many years. Both these assumptions are very realistic. Now both get admitted for total knee replacement surgery. This is highly unlikely to be a complication of the preexisting disease (HIV+ or diabetes). yet one gets claims from insurance company, and the other is denied. How is that not discrimination. Come to think, an HIV+ cannot even get claim for any minor surgical treatment or hospitalisation from a disease which is wholly unrelated to their disease. Both HIV+ and HIV- suffer from the same disease, but one is denied.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Need help from doctors regarding my joint pain. From mid of May, I'm experiencing joint pain in the fingers of hands and legs.

History: In April mid, I was diagnosed with viral infection and hospitalised for 3 days. Soon after discharge, I had red rashes throughout my body (no itching). Doctor recommended a skin cream and it went off within 2 days.
In mid of May, I had severe cold and the tone of my voice changed a bit. This soon cured, but then started the joint pain in the fingers of hands and legs.

I consulted an ortho specialist. Doctor suspected problem with uric acid levels. But the blood test report came normal (uric acid level: 5.6).
I was then asked to get tests for vitamin D3 and Vitamin B12. The latest blood test readings are:
  • HAEMOGLOBIN PERCENTAGE -> 15.3 gm/dl
  • ERYTHROCYTE SEDIMENTATION RATE -> 01 mm/Hr
  • URIC ACID (Uricase) -> 5.7 mg/dl
  • RHEUMATOID FACTOR IgM CLASS (NEPHELOMETRY) -> Less than 10.20 IU/ml
  • VITAMIN B12 (Chemiluminescence) -> 195.0 pg/ml
  • 25 (OH) VIT D TOTAL (Vit D2+Vit D3) -> 62.21 ng/ml

From the latest report, I can see that Vit B12 is low with 195.0 pg/ml (reference range being 243 - 894 pg/ml).

I'm yet to show this latest test report to my ortho doctor tomorrow.

Can the deficiency in Vit B12 cause such joint pains? My online research revealed that Vit B12 shots are given to reveal joint pain. I saw no reference anywhere indicating that Vit B12 shortage can cause joint pains.

Note: I'm a vegetarian (most sites indicate that B12 deficiency usually shows up in vegetarians)

Re: Proteins for elderly people?

What would be a better protein supplement for an elderly person? The doctor has advised soya meals, but he does not like soya.

Are there any other alternatives? Please advise!

Also, can we get 100% cranberry juice in the market? The 'Real' brand is a concentrate of cranberry juice.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Need some help here. I get this itchy nose with continuous sneezing once i wake up. Parents informed this is due to the cold water which i drink directly from the fridge. One fine day, dad gave me a nasal spray Aquamet and this allergy/condition vanished within couple of days.

Now my wife has got the same condition and she is suffering a lot. Tried Aquamet with her, which worked for couple of days and it resurfaced on a regular basis. Once she takes cetzine, she gets a relief. But after knowing the side effects of that tablet, she is now hesitant. What is this condition and what is the remedy?

My 6.5 yr old son has lost his milky teeth (front) since 4-5 months but the new teeth have not grown back for one of them. For the other too the teeth is coming out with serrated edges and has come out just 2 mm. Do I need to be worried?
