In mid of May, I had severe cold and the tone of my voice changed a bit. This soon cured, but then started the joint pain in the fingers of hands and legs.

I consulted an ortho specialist. Doctor suspected problem with uric acid levels. But the blood test report came normal (uric acid level: 5.6).
I was then asked to get tests for vitamin D3 and Vitamin B12. The latest blood test readings are:
  • HAEMOGLOBIN PERCENTAGE -> 15.3 gm/dl
  • ERYTHROCYTE SEDIMENTATION RATE -> 01 mm/Hr
  • URIC ACID (Uricase) -> 5.7 mg/dl
  • RHEUMATOID FACTOR IgM CLASS (NEPHELOMETRY) -> Less than 10.20 IU/ml
  • VITAMIN B12 (Chemiluminescence) -> 195.0 pg/ml
  • 25 (OH) VIT D TOTAL (Vit D2+Vit D3) -> 62.21 ng/ml
Hello scorpion_blore,
Sorry to know about the trouble you are going through. Few queries:
  • Your age and gender?
  • Do you experience joint stifness after waking up in the morning or after long period of inactivity / rest? If yes, how long does the stiffness persist?
  • Did anyone in your family had such symptoms earlier?

Rahul, I think Scorpion's problem was due the viral fever. I did go through the fever in early July, and have been on homeo after that. Ankles and finger joints (right hand, 2 fingers) affected. Now a trace of this is left. Had taken paracetamol during the 3 days of fever.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

My cousin 46 year old female who was on Birth Control Pills for 7-8 years has bad melasma due to that (she is no longer on the pill). She went to a skin doctor a week back and he prescribed her medicines, creams, facewashes and sunscreens which may come to around Rs. 6000 for a month and may have to be continued for some time.

If there is any skin doctor here can they give their opinion on whether this is useful, whether there are cheaper substitutes?

Glogeous Face wash - Rs. 600 for 100 gms
EnerC1000 - 1000 mg effervescent Vitamin C tablets - Rs. 320 for 20 tablets.
XEdge (Asthaxanthin, Beta Carotene, Omega-3 Mulivitamin) - Rs. 140 for 10 tablets.
Suncross Soft Gel Sunscreen - 50g - Rs. 545
Glutone (L-Gluththione 500mg, Alpha Lipoic Acid 10mg) - Rs. 940 for 10 tablets
Aziderm (Azelaic Acid) 20% - Rs. 200 for 15g
Kojitin (Kojic Acid with Mulberry and Licorice) - Rs 215 for 15g

Can someone please help? She is rather upset about the cost.

For the last 2 weeks i am suffering with dry cough. Have tried all home remedies and it has reduced the frequency of the cough but it hasnt stopped. While breathing from mouth can hear the passage blocked sound and phlegm comes out with each hard cough. What could be the reason and which doctors to consult, general physician or an ENT? What could be the cause?

Weight reduction (if you are overweight) will go a long way to help you.

As for the hypertension, adjustment in dosage or a combination of drugs may be helpful. Consult your doctor before taking any schedule - H medication.

I am aged 30 (weight - 83 kg) and yesterday went to do a Lipid profile and blood sugar test. Though the lipid profile seems to be ok, but I am a bit confused/worried about the blood sugar level. My current result shows -

Blood Sugar Fasting - 107.6 mg/dl (Normal Value : 70 - 110)

Should I be worried about potential diabetes ?

Repeat the test with atleast 8 hours fasting and a postprandial. 2 hours after breakfast.

Start walking 30 mins a day.

Repeat these tests every 2 months.

If you have symptoms of diabetes, increased thirst, increased frequency of urination, getting up at night frequently to urinate, go see a doctor.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

A dear relative, has had slipped disc (She is not overweight, more from sedentary work, 5'1' - 51 Kg) in the L5S1 position in Jan 2013, worked very hard on the recovery and did well. However she had a relapse in April 2015. Rested and worked on the recovery again.

She is now considering going for a course of Panchakarma - Back pain and rejuvenation - 8 - 21 days - the schedule varies at each place - end December at Kerala.

However we are not sure of where to go and how to evaluate.
Please do share if you know of a place where effective and cost efficient treatments are available.

Thank You

Don't know much about this, but someone I know swears by the Arya Vaidya Sala in Kottakal. This place was established over a century ago and is like a big-sized teaching hospital, except they do only ayurveda. They also do panchakarma as a residential program with a range which includes everything from slumming it out to getting airconditioned accommodation with TV & modern amenities. Personally, the blood-letting part of panchakarma put me off a bit.

Before going there, I suggest you visit their branch in Kalasipalayam. This is one of their own branches and apparently the doctor there is famous.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

The problem is Wind...

My poor wife has periods every day when she cannot stop belching. She can go on continuously for 30-60 minutes. She can get up in the morning belching. How can that be? The problem has been going on for many months, and she has seen a number of doctors, and nobody gets to the root of it.

The "obvious" routine of using the medicines (I forget the name) that lower the stomach acidity has been tried several times. She has been to IMPCOPS, as well as western-medicine doctors. Nothing seems to work. The last alopathic doc she saw wanted to do endoscopy, and she ran away in horror. Then she says, "Oh, western medicines don't suit me." Fine: but neither, it seems, do traditional-Indian medicines seem to do any good either. She has chased around several other alternative medical things too. I know how she feels: I had a cough for five years, which was eventually cured by surgery, when the British NHS docs eventually thought of looking in the right place in the right way.

Her diet is veg, but not so much trad S. India veg. She has been influenced by yoga towards more fruit and veggies than the piles of rice she would have grown up on.

Any ideas? Including recommendations for a really good gastro specialist in Chennai who is good at handling difficult patients.

Oh, something I typed above made me think... She is 59 (younger than me!) and the stresses of menopause are supposedly in the past, but some of my older ladyfriends have told me that it can continue to do weird things for many, many years.

If medication is unable to solve the problem, endoscopy is the next step. From your description, she may have a loose oesophageal sphincter that lets the food contents from the stomach regurgitate upwards and causes problems. If this is the case, it can lead to damage/irritation /inflammation of the food pipe which definitely must be looked at through endoscopy.

A lifestyle change would be to stop eating 3 hours before bedtime. Weight loss (if obese) may help. Early morning exercise on an empty stomach to speed up metabolism. A 30 min brisk walk is a good start.
Eat all meals from 8am to 7pm.

Thank you

Generally, her main food intake is breakfast and lunch: she dislikes eating late in the day, and, even if taken out for dinner will only eat a little. She is slightly overweight, appearing large in the abdominal area. but I would hesitate to say obese. I know many, many who are far larger!
