Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hi Guys,

I am looking for suggestions here. I am 5'11". My weight is 57 Kgs Approx. And it has always been in range of 55-60 Kgs. I made a lot of efforts to gain weight few years back but then the results were not fruitful and after that I did not bother about it much. My diet is heavy though I am very choosy about what to eat. Now I seriously want to gain weight and have not been able to figure out what's wrong. I eat heavy meal twice a day. Shall I visit a doctor for help ?

I had very heavy dandruff problem a few years back and consulted a doc who had prescribed Nizoral Anti-Dandruff solution. Really worked magic.

All you have to do it is to apply it in your head (scalp), and leave for some 10-15mins and then have a bath. The doc asked me to do it (if I remember right) for some 3-4 weeks and it gave me good results in just the 2nd iteration. I have been using it on my own these days whenever I get dandruff.

I would like to share similar experience in my early life. I was quite thin during my teenage years and similar to your predicament, i would eat a lot in the hope of gaining weight. I did not gain weight inspite of my high calorie diet over few years in my late teens.
At around 20 years of age, I joined the Officer Training Academy(OTA) of the Indian Army and it was during that phase that I grew muscles and also gained weight. To me, the simple corollary was that I did work out and the food also helped to increase my muscle mass. I hope that would give you some pointers. You could try exercises and join gym or yoga workouts.

Again, not being a doctor, I would not advise you against getting medical help in case you would like further diagnosis.

@Nik,
Weight gain is easy if you track your calories you consume.

You need to find out your TDEE and then add more calories to the figure, this is the most scientific way known to me to add weight.

I have done the same using an app called myfitnesspal, i use this to track what i eat and on religiously doing it for fifteen days i have gained some good weight.

So if your serious you should consider this method.

All you need to do is:

1. Reassure your child and provide emotional support. Explain her that it's a common thing which will resolve on its own eventually. Avoid angry responses and punishments for bed wetting.

2. Ask her not to take any fluids at least for 3-4 hours before she's off to bed.

3. Ask her to refrain from consuming carbonated beverages and caffeine containing drinks such as tea, coffee, etc.

4. Ask her to void urine before she gets to the bed.

5. Waking up in the midst of night a couple of times and voiding urine will definitely help her stay dry.

Trust me, non-pharmacological measures are quite effective in managing this.

P.S: I'm a Pediatrician and I myself had faced this issue which persisted till I'm 14 years old.
Thanks for your response. I really appreciate that. Your words are really encouraging. Thanks again.

Dear Doctors on the forum,
I was shocked to hear of the death of my friend who was just 22yrs old due to cardiac arrest. He was mildly obese and was lately spending extra hours in the gym and collapsed suddenly in the morning. To give a background, he used to consume alcohol once in a few days to a good level. Will this be a contributor?

Speaking of this, could anyone please share some light on:
1. What level of such exercise / stress is bad.
2. What to watch out for and what not to do.
3. How to gauge the kind of stress we are facing.

I am quite worried about this and would like to know more information so kindly help and relieve my worries.

Don't be afraid and don't panic. He would not have passed away from a heart attack due to blocked coronary arteries. It would mostly due to some other inherited/congenital heart disease, one of the common ones fitting your description being HOCM or hypertrophic obstructing cardiomyopathy.

My suggestion is live life happily and do everything in a balance. Don't fall for those corporate advertised complete full body health packages!

Thanks for the prompt reply Mohit. I was more curious than worried as he was not that very fat. Maintaining balance yes, I agree every bit on that part. Regarding advertisements, I am not falling for it. Just for the record I had to take an executive health screening before joining work a few months back and I think I will repeat it annually considering I am 23 now.

Hello Doctors!

I would need some advice on improving beard growth. I am 18 year old.

I have had an average beard growth starting from the age of around 15. I am not into the shaving phase as yet, but use an electric trimmer every 2 months. My beard growth is slow (unlike moustache) and it takes considerable time of around 1.5-2 months for me to get a full beard. Is there anything I can do to improve this or shall I let it improve naturally?

I do have some light patches around cheeks. Also beard growth on left side is more than the right side, which I have been observing from a long time. Any pointers to make the growth even/uniform?

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hello Doctors,

I am writing this post to inquire about improving the health of my son.

He is 10 years and 09 months old. Brilliant, energetic and dynamic. He is cheerful too. But he is thin. His height is 4'4" (1.3 m) and he weighs 22.4 kg. Compared to the other kids in the class, he looks thin and underweight.

Weight at the time of birth was 6 pounds; it was a normal delivery. Since his infancy till today, he was not much interested in eating. Compared to his elder sister, he had less intake of mother's milk. Stopped feeding by the time he was a year old.

He has been always disinterested in taking lunch / dinner / breakfast. If we serve him his favorite food, then too he eats less compared to other kids. If the food (vegetables) are not his favorite, he will it even lesser; he will consume 2 chapatis but very little vegetables.

Same about drinking milk; we need to push him. And he needs the support of biscuits / bournvita to finish the unpleasant milk.

But he likes fruits.

Our worry: His growth shall not be affected. There shall not be any compromise with his long term health later in the life.

Request the Doctors to help.

This is exactly what I meant. "Considering I am 23" sounds like you are a 80 year old man. You are just 23! Why on earth do you want annual health check ups. Just maintain a healthy life style, eat all you like and be happy. If you are still worried then get a basic blood work up done once in 3-4 years. Cheers!

Why not ? It's a annual check-up. Even if he doesnt need it, he might inspire others who would actually need it.

@Swift Guy!
Once you start shaving with a razor and foam, your beard will get thicker and fuller at-least that's what happened in my case.
