Now most of the time I feel my nose is blocked and if I have cold drinks then the next day is hell. I was diagnosed with Allergic Rhinnitis, treated, got well, again caught with same symptoms, treated, got well, again the same.

Is operation the only way out?? I understand that operation is not the permanent solution. What alternative do I have.
I also suffer from same problem (allergic rhinitis) and it really is a problem here in Bangalore (normally I feel much better when I am traveling outside India, even in freezing cold). I tried medicines (the usual treatment - anti-allergic + antibiotic) so much that now they don't really offer any relief. I think medicines are not much help in this condition. At best, just temporary respite that too for some time only.

I have resorted to unconventional means now, especially yoga and it's bit better in containing the problem. I do Jal Neti. There are videos online to learn that and otherwise you can approach any yoga teacher. There's also some evidence that lotus root tea helps with clearing a stuffy nose. You could try that. These are non medical methods but probably no harm in trying.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Need suggestion for a peculiar pain in the throat. Started about a week back and is otherwise troublefree unless when I try to swallow something. It pains at that time and then in the early mornings. Sometimes there is cough as well but neither of them are continuous. The problem with ENT doctors near my area is that none of them are available in the mornings, but only in the evenings and I want to go to them with some understanding of what the issue is and would like to avoid multiple visits if possible.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hello,

Requesting advice for my current situation, I have been suggested RCT by dentist for pulp cavity on second upper premolar.

1.) What are the risks involved with such treatment? Will the cap hold good for years to come.
2.) I am thinking like "why fix it, if aint broken", not experiencing severe pain & the occasional sensitivity which has come down after using omnident toothpaste.
3.) Are there risks involved with postponing this treatment?

I have an appointment today at 6:30 pm and extremely anxious about it.

My previous RCT during the mid-90's, when I was 13 years old resulted in unbearable pain and eventual removal of the tooth.

Rgds,
Vinod

Vinod, go for it.

If done correctly, the cap will last a long time. My last RCT was done in 1999-2000, and is holding just fine. It was a bad one in terms of size of cavity, but is still good.

Going early helps by keeping the size of the filling small. If you delay, the decay expands. The amount of work will then be more. If the decay gets to a point where pus forms inside, then treatment is more painful.

"Why fix it if it aint broke" ? We may feel that there is nothing wrong, but the X-rays show decay even before we experience it. The occasional sensitivity is a symptom of the problem inside.

No need to fear. Things have changed - at least from my previous treatment sessions a few years ago. Nice to see that they first spray a numbing agent before injecting local anasthesia. This was nt the case earlier. However, in my case it did pain when he was cleaning it inside with a screw. If you go early, you may not have to experience such pain.

As long as the Doctor is competent, it should be fine.
A senior person who we used to go to messed it up for my mother. The dentists we go to now are much younger, but good !

Note:
I am in the middle of one RCT. Next sitting tomorrow. There was pus inside, so we could not complete the filling on monday.

Hi Vinod,

The X-ray clearly shows pulpal involvement in the upper second premolar. If you're not experiencing pain/sensitivity, it could mean it's a chronic infection.

1) If proper treatment protocol is followed and the procedure is done by a competent Dentist, I foresee no problems whatsoever. RCTs following protocol have shown tremendous success rates in studies. With regards to the cap (or crown in our dental terms), if the tooth preparation has been done adequately and considering the new and advanced materials used, the crown will outlast you

2) Like I said the X-ray already shows pulpal involvement, it's just a matter of time before it exacerbates to an acute condition wherein you will have intense pain, buildup of pus at the apex of the tooth and propably an intraoral swelling too. Since it has been caught early, I suggest you go ahead with the Root Canal therapy at the earliest.

3) Postponing would lead to more damage to the tooth sometimes to the point of irreversible damage during which time extraction may be the only way out, better to get it done now. From this X-ray it looks like a simple single sitting procedure.

This procedure is done under Local Anesthesia where either the tooth or a complete quadrant of your mouth will be numbed. Local anaesthetics are usually not effective in the case of an active infection wherein you might experience pain during the procedure. In this case, Your dentist will put you on a small course of antibiotics before starting the procedure.

These days an RCT is a simple procedure, usually takes 20-25 minutes for a premolar tooth from start to finish and is not uncomfortable.

Good luck.

Regards,
Dr Aniketh Sharma

We need our dentists to be superb anaesthetists as well as superb dental surgeons!

I'm happy to say that, in my experience they usually are. Since childhood (over fifty years ago) I have not experienced a painful dentist. If something hurts, tell them. They will try to do something about it.

Having said that, I always tense up for the injection! Even with surface numbing, I hate that bit. Then I relax and let him or her get on with it.

Hi everyone. I wanted to ask for a little help. Over the last few days, half of my right eye turns red, and slightly above the eye, near the eyebrow, i have a little pain. I am not sure what it could be since I haven't had any physical accident and nor have I ever had something fall into my eye or hit my eye. It isn't bleeding, but half the eye turns red. Quite strange, I fail to understand what it could be. Any advice will be highly appreciated.

You might have a stye or a chalazia inside of the upper eyelid. Get it checked with a ophthalmologist. Can be painful if left untreated.

I'm perfectly fine with that doctor coming in and giving dental advice.
However, I do object to a dentist putting the words "honey" and "cake" in his handle.

These poor guys are probably making (empty) promises to never eat anything sugary ever again for fear of another RCT, and you come running in here with a "drhoneycake" handle?

Honestly man, show some compassion.

PS: Yes, I do remember your intro thread where you mentioned your handle was chosen since it sounds like your first name!

Hi Dr. Aniketh!

I have to replace silver filling in one of the tooth and the doctor will first drill the remaining filling and clean up the tooth.

Is there any procedure where the drilling won't hurt at all? In the past I have tried local anasthesia and it didn't work (doctor had informed me that it won't work but I still insisted). Drilling is extremely painful and scary and it the only reason making me avoid visiting a dentist...
