Re: How long do you keep your car?

So my Swift Petrol is around 12 years old now. It's done around 90,000 kms. My driving is highly reduced in the last 4 years, I drive only around 2000-3000 kms per year now. Since my usage is now quite low, I wish to keep using it as long as possible? What is the life of these cars - how long can I expect to not give major problems? The only major repairs on this car have been clutch assembly replaced twice and the fuel pump replaced once.

Re: How long do you keep your car?

My first car was a second hand buy. It was 3 years old when it came to me and I kept it for 6 years. I had to sell it off due to increasing maintenance costs. It was a tata Indica V2. I covered 1L+ km in those 6 years with many trips with friends.

My current car is 6 years old now and still going strong. It is the Vista D90. Performs fantastically with ok mileage in bumper to bumper Pune city traffic. So I plan to keep it and if required buy an automatic for the wifey.

My dad has a 2005 Swift petrol run some 62k kms.
I have got the clutch replaced once, the thermostat failed once and rear dampers once.
Other non mechanical parts which wear out due to age were replaced as and when required.
Apart from these small issues, the car runs fine. I am not planning to sell it off either as it is perfect for city use.
If serviced regularly and required parts replaced on time, it will last as long as you want, especially being a petrol.

Re: How long do you keep your car?

My longest running car is a Sonata Embera 2.4 M/T at 1,35,000 Kms. A few in my garage like Sonata GDi has only covered 23,000 Kms while other are in the range of 40,000 to 75,000 Kms.

I have never sold my car till they disappoint me and strand me on road or I have something better to buy in lieu. Only one car was capable of stranding me on a uphill journey to mountains was the Ford Escort in 2001 I owned.

Re: How long do you keep your car?

Currently driving a 3.5 year old, 47000 kms Linea Diesel. I generally keep my cars in great shape and plan to keep them till the end of their life. I feel any well maintained 15 year old car exudes lot of class. I have seen Lineas touching 2.1 lakh kms in India and intend to keep it so long. My running now is 15000 kms a year. So, i am looking at another 10 to 11 years with the Linea.

Re: How long do you keep your car?

My 1st car, Hyundai Santro 2001 LS served me for 11+ yrs.
My 2nd car, Honda City 2007 GXi is still serving us for past 12+ yrs.
My 3rd car, Renault Duster RXZ AWD is still serving us for the past 5+ yrs.

I do intend to swap the City with an auto hatch OR a used D-segment sedan. Likely BS6 Jazz or Polo GT TSI or a used V40 (if I can find one under 20L) OR a used Camry or Accord or Passat.

Just an update. Since I wrote this, I have spent around 25000 this year in some major repairs. An axle issue was repaired. The suspension & steering was overhauled. Car is nearing 13 years now.

Re: How long do you keep your car?

I run my cars till they absolutely dont!

1st Car : 5 years: Fiat Uno ELX 1.2 petrol: 2000-2005 : 70,000 kms Sold it because of sheer unrealibility. Car had seen Engine rebuild, AC replacement, starter, and some others within 70k kms

2nd Car : 14.5 years till now : Baleno Lxi : 2005-till date : 120,000 kms, still going strong but now AC has a few niggles (uneven cooling)

3rd Car : 13.5 Years till now : Santro eRLX : 2006 - till date : 32000 kms done. My father drives it. Some issues with power steering..repaired for now.

4th Car : 10.5 Years till now : Innova Vxi : 2009 - till date : 180,000 kms. No issues apart from some minor routine maintenance

5th Car : 8.5 years old : Accord 2.4 AT : 2011-till date : 128,000 kms. Running strong but is niggle prone compared to the Innova. Has seen power steering, front suspension, rotors, AC relay, power window switches, re-circulation air switch etc replaced.

6th Car : 7.5 year old : Sonata 2.4 GDI automatic : 2012 - till date :65,000 kms. Reasonably reliable compared to the accord till now. side AC vent tabs have broken off though.
