Pay A Price for New Year SMS Irrespective of Your Plan

Just got a service message from Vodafone Maharashtra stating that all SMSes on 31st December & 1st January shall be charged at Re 1 for Local, Rs. 1.5 for National & Rs. 5 for International ones. It is applicable for everyone irrespective of their call plans.

So just be careful before you go all out on your phonebook. And, is there any other mobile service operator which has announced such rates; please add them to this thread.

I use Airtel, haven't received any intimation from them so far. But they are clever people, would simply add up in the bill without any prior information.
Anyway not a worry for me, as I send very few messages on such occasions.

Mobile companies have other tricks to increase usage, they frequently circulate messages like - Forward this msg. to 5/10 people & recieve a special gift/miracle, etc. there are hundreds of such msgs. doing rounds on various networks.
Beware!

Mobile companies have such a monopoly, if they just want to raise 2-3 crores for their ever growing galleries, all they need to do is charge extra for a call/sms per consumer and there you go

Its a means to mint money.. Like what happened with Surabhi & competition postcards.

Most of the postpaid plans have a 10k sms/month plan and all that. So to tax such users, they come up with such plans. And as Abhinav had mentioned, its implemented for most of major festivals such as Diwali/Holi.

Anyways network jams generally delay in delivery of SMS. So better send it on the 2nd

I got this one on a corporate postpaid connection. So it is for both. Also, so far only Vodafone or !dea folks have reported this. Anyone else, any other network?

For those on Airtel, I am not yet aware of any such charges (personal connection). It should have been communicated by now if it was so.

I dont know for to whom it applies, be it Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance, be it prepaid, postpaid, etc., but I appreciate this move. I am fast asleep and I have 10 messages about " happy new year " and my sleep is disturbed. Then I have to clear my inbox.

I would rather love to have email rather the have this sort of irritating messages. Well wished from heart are welcome, but can be done by other means also like personal meet, etc. Its not always possible, but then sms always is not a good option.

People are going to override this by logging into way2sms or indyarocks websites.

I use Airtel (corporate connection) and I have received a message from Airtel that discounted charges of Rs.1 for STD for 31st and 1st is not valid. It will be more. But AFAIK, I have not received any communciation pertaining to sms for these particular dates.

I havnt got any message till now but was surprising thinking about the same today. 31st and 1st are no holidays and no festivals as such so it doesnt sound rational for telco's to overcharge. Expect TRAI to nail them on this too in future!
