Design Rupee Symbol - Win Rs 2.5L - It is Done!

$ - US Currency
£ - UK Currency
€ - Euro
¥ - Japan's Yen

But Indian Rupee doesn't have any symbol. It shares the symbol 'Rs' with Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Seychelles.

To overcome this deficiency, Finance Ministry is holding a public competition for a design of unique symbol for Rupee.

The winning entry for the rupee symbol carries a prize of Rs 2.5 lakh but its designer would have to surrender the copyright to the government.

Last date is April 15. So, hurry !

More info here: What will be the symbol for the Rupee?

INR is just an abbreviation AFAIK, similar to USD, GBP, SGD etc. However, we are talking about a symbol (logo) for the rupee here.

IMHO, a symbol makes sense only if the Rupee is accepted as a global currency.

Now, we might need new computer keyboards too with the updated Re symbol.

True. And they will have to create that ASCII thingy for the new symbol too.

I have an idea. My sign of choice is appended to the national number.

Let me see.

Nobody accepts the Rupee at any money exchange bureau outside India and the only place it is useful outside India is where there are Indian businessmen to do havala like in Hong Kong, Dubai and Singapore.

Oh wait I've got the perfect international symbol!

I think we should be designing counterfeit proof notes. That's more important IMO. And maybe something like the Australian notes - that can be washed and cleaned, and dont disintegrate with dirt, pan, holi etc.

While Sam has come up with a good symbol, it would require changes to keyboard and stuff. Better option would be to use what is already available on the keyboard and something that is easy to write out too. Like the percentage symbol.

% : This would be an apt choice given that it gels perfectly with the %age culture rampant in our country. As in, "What % of that contract/tender is my share if I get the deal through?"
