Trying to save my lovely boy (my 6 and half years old boxer)

My Bilu was not keeping well from Feb 3rd, I thought it was gastric issue and gave him some medicine but it did not do any good, I decided him to take to Dr on Saturday 6th Feb, gave the blood sample and got the general check up done. Dr told me to come next day for knowing about the report and also told me to get bilu along with me. I logged out of my work place early and rushed home at 9 A.M and took him to Dr. Dr told me to get him to X-ray room we took the X-ray. Dr told his renal count has gone to 16. Asked him what’s next? he told we can try dialysis or if you want to end this here then euthanize. I had no words, my eyes immediately filled with tears and there was no word coming out from my mouth, finally asked Dr is there any think that we can try, Dr told we can try Peritoneal dialysis that should get the renal count down and once he starts having food we can try some medicine and keep it in control.

Dr told once it’s started we need to complete the treatment and if you cannot do that, then you can take a decision (when he made this statement I got what he was saying) within no second I committed for the dialysis, I asked Dr whether it’s going to hurt him what exactly we will be doing, Dr told there will be a small pipe that would be put below his abdomen, I don’t recall the biological term for that ( he told it’s like a bag inside where all the internal organs will be floating) Dr told as he is still young he will respond for the medicine.. Bilu was given D5 and RL IV’s and 3 injections and came home. My mom was waiting for me and after reaching home she rushed to gate to know what happened, told her about the renal count and felt bad, I was not able to control my tears and broke down. My mom felt very bad, he used to be with her all the time and he wanted only her to serve the food to him. He used to have food 4 times a day and now he had stopped having food as his renal count had gone high, if my mom was preparing something in the kitchen he used to sit in the back yard near the kitchen and wait for this part.

It was Monday morning, I was getting ready to take bilu to Dr for getting the dialysis started, Dr had told me once it’s started then he would teach, me so I can do it in home. Took him to Dr and he again asked him whether will I be able to follow the complete dialysis process or had I decided anything else. Told Dr whatever it is, I will start the medication and I will see to that everything from my end will be done to save him. He told me to pick up the Peritoneal dialysis fluid from Vijaynagar as in whole of Karnataka there is the only one person who is supplying it and it would be supplied directly to the hospitals or to the patients. Bilu was given IV’s again and came back home and rushed to Vijaynagar for picking up the dialysis fluid. It was a very tiring day, my mom came with me for picking up the dialysis fluid she was trying to explain me the reality, she wanted me not fell bad or get upset if anything goes wrong, I was able to make out by the way she was speaking to me. Mean while had messaged my manager for 2 days leave, he called me up told him about the issue and he agreed for the leave.

Took Bilu to Dr in evening and got the dialysis started, he was give a General anesthesia and below his abdomen there was a 1.5” cut done for putting the dialysis pipe. When the skin was cut, I was not able to see that, I just sat down holding his head and Dr his assistants completed the installation in 5 min and the dialysis fluid was loaded in. When I was going all through this my buddy speekfreak, was calling me and getting the update on bilu’s health. You guys won’t believe I had not even got time to have some water that day, when Karthik came to Dr’s place I asked him to get me the water. He was with me till the time I left home in the night. After Karthik left, I was supposed to get the fluid unloaded and reload a new bag and then go home, Dr had told his assistant for unloading the fluid, but he was not able to do that as there was a small membrane which was stopping it, called the Dr immediately and he told me to get bilu to west of cord road clinic after going there it was just fixed in minutes.

very sorry to hear that.who or what is billu?(it is not mentioned any where in your post).please forgive me if i was rude.
what is the diagnosis.
there are lot of treatment options.the renal parameters are raised in a no.,of diseases.to bring it down we do peritoneal(your case) or hemodialysis.
kidney transplant is the final option, not euthanesia.what investigations were done on billu.
please be clear about the diagnosis.our prayers are with you.

I assume billu is going to undergo CAPD. It's convenient for what it is, less painful than dialysis and the patient can have some semblance of a "normal" life, if you can call it that anymore. What is his age?

Having a kidney surgeon (transplant specialist) as a father who himself went through renal failure, hemodialysis for about 7-8 months and finally a kidney transplant, my personal recommendation would be to get a transplant done. I'm not a doctor, far from it. But I've been on both side of the fences and trust me, you don't want to see your boy in such a state of misery.

CAPD (peritoneal dialysis) or hemodialysis are stopgap solutions to keep the body going for the meanwhile... to keep the blood clean. But your final goal should always be to get a transplant done as soon as possible.

The immunosuppressants which are to be taken after a transplant for the rest of a patient's are incredibly strong medicines and the dosages have to be kept in check perfectly. But compared to dialysis, the mental and physical agony are reduced by a huge factor.

I wish I could say that the next few months of your life will be easy. But they won't be. All I can say is that if there is a God, I hope he looks down on your boy and blesses him and your family. Sincere apologies if I've hurt you in any way by being so direct. Please pm me if you need any information/help or names of good doctors in India, I should be able to help you out and would even try to get you personally referred to them if I can. Good luck buddy!

Yeah, even I didn't get that. But since euthanasia is an option, definitely not human.

Anyway Vinay, our collective prayers are with Bilu. And we sincerely hope that your lovely boy springs back to health.

Im guessing its his pet cat for 2 reasons, the renal issues are on the high among cats these days as my girfrens cat is recovering from it right now and ofcos the option of euthanasia, worst to bear!

We all will pray for Bilus recovery, he will be fine soon dont worry!

May God be with you and Bilu. But remember one thing 'whatever happens happens for good' if you are a believer of God! Take care brother...

God bless

I have a lump in my throat and am not thinking straight so forgive any transgressions.

Vinay - sorry to hear about billu. I wish you and billu all the strength and courage.

CAPD is considered a better option compared to Heamodialysis or renal transplants. CRF or Chronic Renal Failure and Amyloidosis are sometimes caused by something else and if that cause is identified and cured the symptoms disappear. Has your Doctor hazarded a guess as to what is the root cause for the kidneys to fail?

With my best wishes and prayers,

Since euthanasia is an option, I am assuming that billu is your pet dog. Going by that assumption, and at the risk of sounding rude and heartless, I suggest euthanizing the pet if Dialysis is the only option. Trust me, you dont want to be taking care of a pet that has a catheter hanging out of its stomach all the time no matter how much you love. Peretoneal dialysis requires you to change the dialysis fluid every 4 - 6 hrs and it is a half hr process. You need santized area to perform it. The risk of infection for your pet is also high and it itches like hell around the incision area.

If Kidney transplant is an option (financially and medically) then go for it ASAP. It should be very easy to find a donor as we have plenty of strays in India.

And yes, sometimes Acute Renal Failure is reversible if it is caused by some other ailment, as in, the kidneys will heal after the ailment is cured. Chronic Renal failure, as far as I know, is not reversible.
