Effect of an EMP on today's cars?

Hi All,
I am curious to know the effect of EMP on today's generations of cars?
I have usually seen ads which tout of having microprocessors in them, so would an EMP render them useless?

I would definitely want to do an EMP pulse on folks who honk / flash headlights behind me ;-).

Guys, I have a sincere request-please put down the full forms of abbreviations in brackets so that laymen like me can understand discussions. At times certain threads look like encoded chat-rooms to me.

Regards

EMP stands for Electro Magnetic Pulse, it is a by product of all nuclear explosions and also used in so called dirty bombs.
These pulses interfere with all electronic equipments within the blast radius rendering them useless and also destroy them.

Obviouslyit will affect all the cars with ECU, so can prove disastrous for cars.

Phew....! you said it Jayabusa. I agree with you totally.

Now coming to EMP, why bother about it in a city. If at all a NB/NE happens, would life survive in such area to even think about the survival of ECU/ECM in automobiles?

NB/NE = Nuclear Blast/Nuclear Explosion.

All members being motorheads here, I don't think ECU/ECM needs expansion..

Hey guys an E.M.P would destroy a modern car electronics. But only if the circuit in ON during the pulse. There is no effect on a switched OFF circuit.

A dirty bomb is a crud nuclear device which does not produce a nuclear explosion only spread radiation in atmosphere.
E.M.P. can be produced without a nuclear explosion, there are way to generate E.M.P. but with a small radius of effect.

Ok, reading about all the "good qualities" of EMP with reference to frying up of the Caretronics, I would like to know if there is a way to bypass the fried up system (in the event of an EMP attack) and limp/cruise back home?

Oh the good ol'e Amby, Fiat days...
