Received sms from DOT (Dept of Telecommunication)

Hi All,

I received this sms today afternoon from IZ-DOT

"Dear Subscriber- If you receive an international call for which CLI displayed is similar to a local or National No. Please inform at Toll Free No 1800110420 or 1963-DOT"

Anybody else got such sms?

This SMS has been doing its rounds for many months now. Most private operators are showing ISD calls as national calls and cyphoning crores of rupees from BSNL etc. Hence BSNL is trying to catch the culprits red handed and expects customers to help them in this regard.

Got a similar SMS years back but this was for ISD calls which had no display. ususally the display would be blank and would only read "incoming call".

Rather than depend on citizens to report such malpractices the govt. should strengthen its technical infrastructure.

Did you receive an international call lately on your mobile ?

I too got the same message 8 months or so back. And it coincided with a friend calling me from abroad, and it was an illegal call too.

Me too received such SMS a while back. Is it to do with those calling cards from abroad?

Routing the ISD calls as a local number is a known fraud done by the private operators. I remember seeing a article/complaint on this on Airtel sometime ago.

Friends,

This is actually the work of illegal operators outside India. What they do is, the route calls illegally into India, thus avoiding paying VSNL or DoT the call landing charges. There is no technology as of now to prevent this. That is why, the department asks us to report such numbers to the operator or service provider. The Indian operators like Airtel, etc. do not have any role in this.

It is in our best interests to report such occurences. This is akin to the hawala transactions to remit money to India. Here you are sending in international calls without paying the government its dues.
