re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched " Predator 2" starring Danny Glover

This is the sequel to one of the most interesting alien movie made in late 80's and early 90's which had Arnie star in the first installment. I was totally zapped when I saw Predator 1. It was an interesting concept and very well handled.

This time the action is in LA and this alien is wreaking havoc in the city where two dangerous drug rival gangs are fighting amongst themselves and this alien steps in between.

Danny Glover was so aggressive in this movie, I truly enjoyed his acting and his aggression. I cant say this movie was better than the previous one but, would say it was as good movie for a sequel.

Lot of blood and gore. So watch out!

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched a couple of movies

Faster

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-fastermovieposter1.jpg

The movie is about a guy who goes on a killing spree after getting released from Prison. He is killing all those who were responsible for killing his brother & also shooting him. This is Dwayne Johnson flick which could have been better if it had some more action, he is looking amazing but has very less action per se.
There is another guy who is a contract Killer & he is probably the worst you would have ever seen. Over all good storyline but poor script & lack of action makes it a one time watch for Dwayne Johnson Fans

2.5/5

The Game

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-thegame1997.jpg

The movie is about a rich investment Banker(Michael Douglas) who is widower & someone who lives a single disconnected from any fun, life. His brother gives him an invitation to use the services of a group which offer recreational services which his brother thinks would be a good experience for him.
After some hesitation he joins & what starts next is a series of weird incidents which he had never foreseen. Over all a good movie till it comes to end. The ending was somehow disappointing for an other wise fantastic movie.

3/5

The Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-rise_of_planet_of_apes.jpg

The movie is set as a prequel to the famous franchise The Planet of the Apes this movie shows how it all begun i.e. the domination of Apes.

The movie starts off with a scientist working on a drug to cure Alzheimer's disease as his father is a patient. His drug experiments on one of the chimps show positive signs but during a meeting to get the funding the chimp get aggravated as she is pregnant which is perceived as a sign of side effects of drug.

The scientist takes the new born of this chimp to home, this chimp raises as a smart Ape with a learning curve faster than humans.

What transpires next is a story of his journey of finding his place in the world to discovering human atrocities, which is when he decides that something needs to be done for his fellow Apes.

Amazing performances by all including the actor who played the lead Chimp (Andy Serkis), the cgi is amazing & so is the storyline.

Good to see Freida Pinto landing a prime role.

Overall a must watch.

4/5

Watched again How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-how-.jpg

This is Romantic comedy about two people who have bets to prove their points about relations ships. The girl has to prove that a relationship with guy can been hooked & broken in 10 days. The guy has to prove that he can make anyone fall in love with him in 10 days.

What ensues is an interesting story of their 10 day journey.

A good watch for anyone who enjoys this Genre.

Saw 'The Motorcycle Diaries'.

I mean, really an inspiration. The guy, Che, had really gained accolades all over the world, all of us know that, so here is a heart felt true-novel turned movie. Simple and truly Latin.

My take - 7.5/10

You must also see the documentary on Che, then you will realise that a lot of that which made him a legend are only a part of the full story

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Has anyone seen "The English Patient".

It's an old movie. But I liked everything about it, including the title song.

Well, I used to watch a lot of movies on NetFlix when I was in the US. And I am looking for a similar option in India.
Does anyone know of any service like that here?

It will really be of help.

Thanks.

I won't write the gist of the movie. Go watch it.

Entertaining and engaging.

Oh yes, its a great movie. Its a MUST WATCH for movie lovers.

It was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards and for nine British Academy Film Awards.
And a lot more I guess. Just watch it.

Too bad I didn't see it in the theatre, but I am glad I didn't miss it.

If you guys like movies on rock climbing or mountaineering, check out "King Lines" and "The Sharp End". Especially Sharp End and you'll realise what living on the sharp end really means

Cheers

In India, we have BigFlix and seventymm. Our resident moviebuff and friendly mod mobike008 is a member if BigFlix, he can shed some light.

Well, let me check these 2 options and see which one is more economical, and has a better collection.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I agree, it is an emotional movie.

I like Ralph Fiennes, and most movies done by him.
God, he is an amazing actor, with beautiful eyes!!!

Thanks for the kind words. I am nowhere compared to some of the other movie buffs on this thread.

I have been using Bigflix since last 3 years and I generally renew with a 1-disc plan for entire year primarily for two reasons

1. 1-disc at a time is the max that you can view considering the busy schedules these days of almost everyone

2. 1-disc per annum costs Rs.3500. For renewal members there are some discounts and it comes down to roughly Rs.2800

Feedback regarding their service

1. When I started out, their collection was not that great and i used to normally pick up from store which was a few meters away from home. But, over the years, they have discarded store sytems and not only deliver mostly to your doorstep

2. Their service is extremely prompt. In last 3 years, they may have not delivered 1-2 times. And, they may have delivered the wrong CD maybe once. 10/10 for this point

3. Their DVD quality is very good. Again in 3 years, maybe 2-3 DVD's had an issue. Otherwise, very good

4. They dont have a great collection for Hindi movies. But, they are slowly improving

5. English collection is very good and going by the number of movies that i still havent seen. I reckon i am good to go for another 2-3 years

6. Only downside, BF has grown phenomenally over the years and my sole assumption for this is because in the past movies which you can like can be reserved immediately. But, now there is a "short wait" "medium wait" and "long wait" system.

7. I just wish they add newer english movies faster to their list.

Overall, I am quite happy with Bigflix and highly recommend them. They are at www.bigflix.com

@Mobike

Do they have a decent collection of movies on Blu Ray?

How's the horror / thriller selection?

Thanks!

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched "Unstoppable" starring Denzel Washington.

Its about a runaway freight train and how an "almost laid off" engineer (Denzel) and his newly hired train conducter bring it to a halt.

Nice, grippy and fast paced movie without too many dull moments. It has action, US economic condition (layoffs) and troubled relationships all rolled into one.

Also, this movie apparently has been inspired by this real life incident - CSX 8888 incident - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Worth a watch.
