Another great movie that I watched recently was The way back. This is about few WW II prisoners from a russian camp who escape and then trek 4000 miles from Siberia to India. Stunning visuals and acting in this film. Totally must watch.

Defiance - based on a true story and on the lines of Schindler's list. A guy saves hundreds of jews from Germans.

Tora Tora Tora - one of the classics. based on the japanese attack on pearl harbor.

The Reader - Kate Winslet in the role of a lifetime.

Das Boot - A very very long movie (I think the original print is about 5 hours long).

Guns of Navarone - Need I write anything about this one!

Europa Europa - about a jewish boy who lives among russians and then germans!

Letters from Iwo Jima - I saw this one in US with three other friends and it was just us in the theater!!! But what a movie it is!
Nice list! From the recent crop The Pianist is exceptional.

Saw Arbitrage today.

Its a story of a wheeler dealer Investment banker who runs a fund management company which has a major hole on the balance sheet. And while trying to set that right, he gets embroiled in his mistress's death in an accident. What follows is some intense play by Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon. Both were really good. And the ending is really a shocker!

Overall good movie!

Rating: 3.5/5

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched a couple of movies.
Die Falscher (The Counterfeiters):
I saw this in German, with English subs, and you have to, too.English just doesn't have the guttural intonations.
Its about operation bernhard (read up, thats a good one in itself), and focuses on a group of inmates at the sachsenhausen camp and how they forge England banknotes, and then the USD for the Nazis.
Mostly focuses on Salomon "sally", the lead character, who looks and acts surprisingly like statham on a diet.
It is, in one word, brilliant!
5/5

Battleship
I had read about this here, but its an okay watch.
I like the premise, and it could have been built into something more dramatic, but they lose it in the second half, and it becomes a straight alien invasion flick.
But, its a good watch.
You dont have to think much, and it has got some fantastic explosions....
If you dont want to think too much, but entertained, catch it.

The aliens, though, for people whove seen it, "half life", anybody?

3/5

Currently trying to catch the grey zone, but somehow, haven't managed to click on the file again after seeing it for 10 minutes.
Concentration camp victims, from Hungary and Poland, with american accents...Geez!!

Watched Hijacked yesterday.

Didnt find anything great. Was kind of mad towards the end of the movie thinking it's a normal movie with no twist. Thankfully, the ending had a small twist.

Overall - Nothing great. 2.5/5

Next in the list - AfterLife, Hall Pass, JFK

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Ironclad:
Another Eng historical fiction. The script is good, the direction and screen play isn't.
Has some pretty decent cast for a low budget, but somehow most have under-performed. Paul Giamatti is somehow not convincing enough as the bad king, James is good, but somehow lacks the flair. The worst are the horse riding scenes, you can actually see the petrified expressions of the cast who're probably first time riders.
Seems a little too filmy with one man fighting scores at once and winning, the heroine waking up the knocked-out-cold hero with her touch, tragic sacrificial deaths of otherwise selfish fighters; the explanation of techniques and schemes is non existent.
The stupidest part: Hero-Heroine riding off on a single horse, desi style, but the heroine's expression clearly show her displeasure/inconvenience at riding the horse.
Pluses: Kate Mara looks great. Jason Flemyng's character is fun.
Verdict: If you're a big hist/hist-fic buff, watch it for the overall good Eng Hist presentation, otherwise skip.

Inkheart:
Great script, poor adaptation. The novel had all the ingredients to become a great film, but fails. Fraser plays the typical fighting-the-mythological stuff father against a weird enemy. Paul Bettany is disappointing, Andy Serkis though is good. I really had a lot of hopes for this, after reading the novel, but it blowed.
The punches are stupid, action lame, emotions fake, characters shallow. Avoid!

Life of Pi is one of the most intriguing books that I have read. Now waiting to see if the movie can do justice. The trailer looks decent, but not fantastic.

Watched Premium Rush

This was on computer as it still does not seem to be released, though it has been released almost a month back in US. This is a story of some bike messenger in new York who rush around in traffic for last minute courier delivery. One such guy gets embroiled in money laundering with NY Police and the story shows how he gets out of it. Action sequences are really great but the story is a drag.

Action Rating: 4/5
Story: 2.5/5
Overall: 3/5
Watchable?: Yes, one time

Infractions: 0/2 (8)

Breaking Dawn Part 1 of the Twilight series was not quite that great.

Beautiful settings and all that jazz but I found the story line a bit too gory and unsettling vis a vis the earlier ones.

Part 2 is likely to be similar I am told on my internet researches.
