re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Fire in Babylon is a superb documentary for cricket buffs. There are a couple of clippings of michael holding in a test match in england, which given the context (or otherwise as well) make it worth watching the documentary. WI were all fire and brimstone then and it shows.

I have been watching movies made by this hong kong director Johnnie To for the last month. Superb movies for anyone who likes dark urban landscapes, lots of plot twists, superb pacing and minimal dialogue, and lots of dark situational humour. All are cop/triad (HK mafia) movies. His direction is very different from bang bang John Woo. So far, will recommend the following movies in the order of how much I liked them:

1) The Longest Nite
Tony Leung just nails this movie. Barring one scene, this movie is a non-stop butter churner.

"A powerful movie that inhales sin, and exhales style."

2) PTU
Slow, slow, check ur pulse to feel you are alive, burner.

3) The Mission
A change of mood from the above two movies - slightly more upbeat, and more fun.

Caution: lots of random violence, plot holes in the above movies, and can test your patience, though u will feel ultimately rewarded. Top quality film noir.

Prometheus: Disappointing, adds nothing to the original Aliens. Visuals, costumes and SFX is fantastic. The story is same old thing. It went to the point of being irritating, with the familiar stupid mistakes "we humans do" every time. Fassbender is superb as an android, rapace is rapacious.

It is obviously a spoof movie, doesn't look any different from the the Scary Movie series.

The dark knight returns

No, not a typo. This is an animated adaptation of frank miller's work.
There's only part-1 available out right, and its about bruce wayne reemerging after a 10 year hiatus, and gordon on the brink of retirement.
Batman comes back to battle the mutants(not actual, just the name), taking over gotham.
It is 102.88% engrossing.
very physical, and brooding.
As with most studio works,

Actually its very different from the Scary/Epic Movie kind of series.
Its a collection of 20 comedic shorts with an ensemble cast boasting of several A-listers. Richard Gere, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Uma Thurman, Kate Winslet to name a few.
Although parts of the movie may be spoof, but I don't think its just a collection of spoofs of the recent hits (like Scary Movie).

For All Avengers Fan, do not miss out on the DVD which contains cut scenes. There is a quite a bit of footage which IMO should not have been removed & which would have helped in understanding the story better.

A must watch on BD ofcourse

Watched 'The Mechanic' half an hour back. If you have grown up on a staple diet of Hollywood action flicks, and if you happen to love spy/hitman/assisin genre (like I do), then you wouldn't be disappointed with this one. The movie plot is a little predictable, but it gets compensated with good acting esp by Ben Foster. Action sequences are nice, Statham in his elements as usual. rating 3.5/5

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched Taken 2 yesterday at the local theater. Was sorely disappointed. The movie was boring, with little story and was mostly a rehash of the first one but set in a different city. There is very little action and all the action scenes are shot with the shaky cam which was irritating. I liked the first one, but this one is best avoided.

Planning to see Looper next week. Has anyone watched it yet? Have heard very good things about this movie so far.

Caught a couple over the weekend.

Batman Beyond : Return of the Joker.

If you're familiar with the batman beyond series, and liked it, then this should be familiar.
Also known as batman of the future, this one is a full feature which sees the return of the joker to torment the new batman, and the old one as Bruce.
Good, packed watch.
4/5

Looper:

Levitt, this guy is going to be huge!!!
And working with bale, I think he has picked up on his methodology.
He looks drastically different as compared to his previous adventures.
Movie is about banned time travel, and criminals using it for their own purposes.
The hero here, Levitt, runs into er, "someone", played by Bruce willis.
Bruce Willis is back to his crackerjack yippee-Kai-yay mode, in parts.

Its not a a through and through action oriented flick, there are quite a few sublime thinking sequences, but enjoyable.
however, its these sequences which threw a lot of people off, as they were expecting gore throughout.
Don't.
Its an awesome way to spend 2 hours of your life.

Watched this movie. Really well made - though I feel that this story needs at least 6 hours - cannot cram such a huge story in a short time. But great movie nonetheless!

Looks like the western media thinks people from the East are not capable of such feats!

+100 to this!

This guy is developing a flair, one that is quite down to earth, yet unique. At times I felt he overshadowed Bruce Willis!

More than that, the plot has been given a lot of thought - at several points, you expect the story to go on a normal flow, and suddenly the next scene hits you like nothing you expected!

I expected another sci-fi movie with full of hi-end graphics; was pleasantly surprised to get a simple movie that could well be placed in the early 20th century than the future.

Overall 5/5. Go watch it for the next big hero of Hollywood, if nothing!

Lorenzo's Oil

This is 1992 movie based on a True Story. The movie is about a Kid(Lorenzo) who develops a rare Disease (ALD) and his parents against all odds to find a treatment. Its a heart touching story with Brilliant performances by Nick Nolte(Father), Susan Sarandon(Mother).

Their commitment to save their child, the research that they do against all odds which includes Doctors, Parents & organizations of Parents with Children who have ALD is worth watching. They end up developing an oil which stops the deterioration process of ALD in many cases of ALD & which was then called Lorenzo's oil after the kid for whom it was first created by his parents.

Agreed; In his era of actors(Jake glynhaal;Ryan Gosling and others ) he is one of the best. Watch 50/50-movie

This movie is kind of Inception : In terms of ideology. Not paying too much attention to the sci-fi aspect but concentrating on the story line.

This movie definately keeps you on the edge till the end and was highly unpredictable to me.

P.S. His makeup has been specifically modified to look like someone(if you get the drift) in the movie.
