Yes, absolutely! The nexus between politicians and police is strikingly similar. You can also draw a parallel with the protection racket in India and also the tussles between the Mumbai "encounter specialists" and human rights groups.

What I liked was that BOPE actually exists! (though it seems to have somewhat of a reputation for violence)

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Would you, Rather.

Its a simple movie.
A small group of people are invited by a very rich to play a game of would you rather do this or that.
Like for instance would a life long vegetarian eat meat for a crazy amount of money.
Would you stab someone in the thigh or lash someone 3 times.

The movie is a little gory and quite mature. But its not like the Saw series.

Watch if you are ok with this genre. I liked it but I would rather not recommend it to my wife.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched Oblivion last week at Prasadz

This film might just be the one that brings to light your extremely debilitating fetish for beautiful cinematography. The movie is visually phenomenal. It's simply a joy to look at. The imagery is iconic and leads to a number of the most beautiful scenes I've seen.

The movie gets slow in pace and then it starts dragging. The plot gets predictable and it takes on a familiar formula seen in plenty of other films. The ending was even weird. I was anticipating an awesome climax but sadly, it's dull and sure enough it leaves you dissatisfied. All in all, nothing revolutionary considering the plot is filled with holes worse than the craters on moon.

Other things I liked in this movie

1. The pool scene where Tom and Victoria swim in the pool at night is romantic and hot.
2. Olga Kurylenko
3. The drones

I would give this a rating of 3 only because of the visual treat else I would have given it only 1. I would only recommend everyone to go see this movie in a theater. Trust me, it just won't be the same on TV.

Rating 3/5

p.s: Don't miss the beginning.
p.p.s: Don't question the logic in this film. The more you think about it, the more you will laugh about it.

It was pretty interesting and a rather OK movie. Expected lot more different games/rounds. But it's Saw series anyday for me. There are other better gory movies than this.

PS - I'm more into horror/gory movie genre so this one will be least recommended from me.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Croods. Interesting - 3/5 possibly.

I am still confused. Simple storyline - how cavemen overcame their fears as their original cave was destroyed and their life got turned upside down.

I can see how many adults/teens would understand it - but go only for this, no? For kids, its not the usual stuff. The hall had some 20 people out of 250 odd seating.

Shucks! Just booked 3 tickets including my 4 year old. Is it slow paced?

My girl (4.5 yrs) loved it. Pretty simple storyline, and I am not sure if she understood the complete movie, but was laughing loud at the right places. Its close to one month now, but she's still talking about it. And have been asking for the next movie with silly sunglasses(3D)

Don't worry at all. The colors and the beautiful and vibrant way they show animals, birds and plants should enthrall any kid. The storyline isn't that hard to understand and well paced, and even kids should be able to grasp it easily.

P. S. I would rate it 5 on 5!

The Croods - 5/5

I feel its a must watch. All characters are funny, especially the granny "... number 6..."

Loved the snapshots. LOL. Earth's first timed family portrait. Dreamworks continue with their splendid work post the Panda magic. Kudos!

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched Olympus has Fallen today at Prasadz.

I felt like watching a good action movie and so went for it. This one doesn't disappoint at all. It's very noisy but I enjoyed every minute of it.

The plot is nothing new. It's the same old story where terrorists take over and one single agent rescues everyone and other than that it's nothing new.
The best part where this stands out is the action and the nice one-liners. From start to finish the action sequences flow perfectly.

If you look at the story, bah, don't even look at it. It's lame and is not convincing at all. If you are in a mood to suspend your belief for a good 1 hr 45 min then go for it.

My rating: 3.5/5

Somehow the main plot of the story reminds me of one of the episode of 24. Somehow the tele-serial is much better captured than the movie. Morgan Freeman as usual is at his best as the speaker, but he should have been the President

Oblivion - 2/5

The only reason I gave it two points is for the post apocalyptic imagery. The visual effects are just astounding.

The movie starts quite strong, has nice initial character development but gets into a rut and becomes boring the moment Cruise gets captured. There were multiple cliches in the movie and the end was rather stupid. Morgan Freeman was completely wasted in his role which was miniscule.

If you've watched Moon, you'd feel this is just a special effects heavy crappier rehash of the same movie.

+100. The movie starts off really well, but gets dragged near the end, the 'Flight Recorder playback scene"...zzz

But the visual effects are outstanding. Tom taking off from the control station, the Drones, the Bike ride are great. When I watched the trailer and saw Morgan Freeman, I was excited and thought the movie will have substance. But, it lacks it.

The next movies I am waiting for are Iron Man 3 (one of my most favorite superhero) and World War Z. World Was Z looks to have tremendous visual effects. Watch the trailer here:

Cheers!

The Host
The Movie is okayish. Aliens dominate earth but they take over the human body. The original human soul is still alive inside the body. Can be downloaded.

Rating : 2.5/5 (0.5 more for the chrome wrapped McLaren, Aprillia and the chopper )
