Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

The Mahabharatha (1989) Directed by Peter Brook.

WARNING : For serious art/theater buffs only.

Its not palatable for everyone here and few may find it interesting. However, what is noteworthy is the western perception of an Indian epic. Except for Mallika Sarabhai none of the actors are Indian. Its more suitable for theater lovers than film buffs. Since we do not have a thread for theater so I posted it here.

Cocaine Bear:

With a title like that, you expect nothing but silly over the top goofiness in a movie that does not take itself seriously.

And it delivers

Purportedly based on a true story, movie revolves around a bear that gets weirdly addicted to cocaine (thanks to a drug drop gone wrong) and goes on the rampage.

Ample gore but it's all very humorous and campy.

3/5

Luther: The fallen Sun

Streaming: Netflix

Expected a lot from Idris Elba but turned out to be damp squib. The plot was revealed very early in the film when the antagonist was on the screen. Can be avoided totally.
I will be totally disappointed if Idris is chosen the new James bond.

Rating: 1/5

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Is anyone else noticing that existing movies are being removed from Netflix or Amazon Prime routinely? Further, why are not some good movies even making it to India even (even because some of them never released in the theaters in India) over OTT/Streaming?

I was looking for many of Alexander Payne's movies: Citizen Ruth, About Schmidt, The Descendants, don't find them anywhere. Likewise for Kubrick movies. Even academy winning movies like The Revenant or The Whale are not to be found. Where can I watch legally these movies in India?

The Whale and Everything Everywhere All At Once are streaming on Sony LIV.

Used to be quite a few Kubrick movies on Netflix - A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Eyes Wide Shut. The former 2 are available on Apple TV/ YouTube now I think.

There’s this app - JustWatch, you could use that to find which movie on what streaming service.

Just one word ! Fabulous. It's genuinely hilarious, absolutely mind boggling, chaotic but simple. Goes up to my all time favorite top 10 movies.
I have been continuously recommending this movie to all my friends and other movie buffs, glad that it got the well deserved appreciation in Oscar and my friends are watching it now

+1 to this!

Clicked on it not expecting much. Was glued to the movie throughout. Very engaging, simple premise, well-executed, well-shot. Great action and drama.

Interesting. But this looks like it was shot on stage, hence the claustrophobia is hard to ignore.

OT: While you are at it, here is Aravindan's take on Ramayana. This has a more realistic portrayal than the ones they make these days.

Chanced upon this gem called "3 billboards outside ebbing missouri" which has the fabulous Frances McDormand in the lead. Beautiful movie.

Thanks for the recommendation. Fun 2 hour watch, especially when I did it without much expectations. Watch it, if for nothing but to get a glimpse of Ray Liotta in one of the last movie(s) he acted in before his death last year.

My rating : 2.5 / 5

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

I watched few DC movies this weekend - DC league of super-pets, Black Adam and justice league. I enjoyed the first two movies a lot, found it much better than vanilla marvel movies. For those interested those are available on Prime.

Watched Shazam! Fury of the Gods & Cocaine Bear this weekend. Shazam was decent, I'm a superhero movie buff so I hardly dislike any.
Cocaine bear was fun, there were moments when I couldn't control my laughter.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

"Inventing Anna" is an intriguing Netflix web series based on a true story. The show presents a captivating plot that is sure to interest viewers. However, it's worth mentioning that the series does contain material that may be unsettling to some viewers who place a high value on physical appearance and trends.

The show satirizes society's obsession with vanity, and this theme is prominent throughout the story. While I, personally, do not give much thought to fashion and how others perceive me, I understand that it is a crucial aspect of adolescence, and it can create both pride and uneasiness.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent: 4.5/5

As someone who grew up watching Nick Cage there was a lot of expectations. And the movie did not disappoint. A movie filled with the perfect amount of comedy, actions, drama and emotions. There were references to other Cage movies. The chemistry between Cage and Pedro Pascal worked extremely well.
One gripe would be that the plot could have been a little better.
Otherwise, a highly recommended one.
