Re: The Regional movies thread!

Middle Class Melodies

Available on Amazon Prime.
It's a comedy drama in Telugu, easy to understand with English subtitles.
I don't understand Telugu but still enjoyed watching this movie.
A good watch with excellent acting and a fresh vibe to it.

Would score it 4/5

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Soorarai Pottru, is a very good watch. Well made movie, with elements of mass entertainer. It’s very difficult to make such a movies which IMHO should appeal to all kind of audience. Its a movie to be watched in theatres. It’s a pity that it couldn’t be released in theatres. It would have been a big hit in all centres (A, B and C) with whistles guaranteed for some scenes.
What I liked most was that nothing in the movie was out of place. It could all have easily gone wrong, but for the brilliant direction and editing. Urvashi is splendid in the movie. Wonder why, not many directors give her such roles. Surya does a very very good job. Having seen him over the years, wasn’t expecting anything else from him. Aparna , I thought was a revelation. I thought that she was a very unusual choice, but she has nailed it.
The music is also damn good.
Few scenes may seem over the top, to some, but I feel that’s the creative liberty that the director has taken to make it appealing to a larger audience. A really good movie with all the necessary and essential elements of a good Tamil movie. Will recommend it to even non-Tamil audience.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

UMA- Bengali Amazon Prime

The movie is based on the tragic story of Evan Leversage who was famously known as ‘the boy who moved Christmas’. The movie is a poignant tale and a tribute to the boy. The setting has been changed to Calcutta but the emotional quotient remains same. Recommended watch with delightful acting by all the major stars of Bangla movie industry.

Macher Jhol- Bengali Netflix

Light hearted movie about a chef returning from abroad and starring some fine talents. Easy going movie with enjoyable moments.

watched it on Prime Nd i liked it too. Although I understand Tamil, I watched it in Kannada audio (a first for me and did it just to experiment). What I liked and hadn't expected was thsy had done more work on it than just a different audio. They had made his native village as Gorur (a village in Karnataka) his bike registration plate was KA13 which is where Gorur will fall under. The boards, written material in the scenes all were in Kannada. Of course I found a few scenes where this was missed but overall lot of work has gone into it. Also to connect well with the multilingual target audience they've selected actors from the Kannada industry too (the DGCA, The VC for eg.) Although many things have been dramatized for a movie, the story is close to reality.

this was my favourite character from the movie. I had never seen this actor before but she has done amazingly well

I'd rate the movie 4/5

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I didn't like 'Soorarai Pottru'. I watched the Tamil one with subtitles. I thought the movie will be closer to the actual story, but it was way too dramatized for my liking. For some of the scenes, it was just high drama for the sake of drama. I was disappointed, because I really like Suriya.

Maybe I got it totally wrong with my expectation! I really dig stories from the real word when it's brought into the big or small screen. Some creative freedom is totally fine. But this one was the other way around. Like they went with total fiction and sprinkled some tidbits from the real world on top of it.

Maybe works like 'The Crown' has really spoiled me. I love the homework they do and the sheer attention to detail even if the scene is there for just a moment.

OT: It looks like going forward, each scene in our movies will have one disclaimer/ warning or the other. Seriously, what was that all about??

She is great! Can totally own any role - her first movie was the amazing Maheshinte_Prathikaaram. Do give it a try if you can stomach a great movie in Malayalam. I think it's there on Prime.

Maheshinte Prathikaram is on Prime. Another good one of Aparna is "Sunday Holiday". A light watch. She is also a pretty good singer.

Andhagaaram [Tamil, Netflix]

Three different story lines - those of a blind library clerk, a psychiatrist recovering from a murderous attack by one of his patients and a sports coach seemingly hallucinating - all build up the suspense and merge towards the end to resolve all loose threads. The suspense was enjoyable; but the movie is fairly long (nearly 3 hours), has a number of unnecessary characters and the denouement I thought was somewhat silly. We had good fun trying to locate and arrange the various threads of the movie (timelines, character relations etc.).

I watched this movie recently. I was not so elated.. there were very few interesting comic scenes. I think the fathers in the film did great job - Hero's, mobile shop girl's and heroine's
If you are interested in such stories, I have a better film to recommend - C/o Kancherapalam,

Andhaghaaram (Tamil)

The Regional movies thread!-mv5bowfmmznkntktyjmwos00odlklwfhntqtnmy3nwu1n2fjn2ezxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvynduymtm4nte._v1_.jpg

Synopsis - Supernatural events occurring in the lives of three people cluster to reveal a connection between the trio.

A pretty decent effort from a debutant. Very well edited and loved the cinematography. The blind dude acted pretty well.

But the movie was a bit slow and unnecessarily lengthy. Had it been under 2 hours, it would have been an interesting watch. Nevertheless, a good attempt.

Rating - 3/5

For the gujjus out here -

Chello Divas and Golkeri on Amazon Prime
Love ni Bhavai on Netflix.

Love ni Bhavai has Pratik Gandhi in the supporting role (I'm sure everyone knows by now who Pratik Gandhi is)

Jigar Shah

Avoid it. Watched it many months ago and was utterly disappointed. The plot is meaningless.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Paava Kathaigal Tamil, Netflix
Watched this yesterday and I loved it. It's not a feature length movie but a collection of 4 short stories. Unlike other such collection of stories like Kathasangama of Kannada or Dus Kahaniyaan of Hindi which were 10 totally unrelated stories, this had a common theme running across them. A theme of pride, societal pressure and honor killing. All the stories are really intense and leave a lump in your throat.

I'll rate the entire thing 5/5...individually, below are my reviews

Oor Iravu (One Night)
Story of a Father (Prakash Raj) who's a respected man in a village and his daughter (Sai pallavi). Prakash Raj, in his brilliant best has enacted the role to perfection. Sai Pallavi has gelled into the role very well and her emotions on the face are al dente!
This story 4.5/5

Thangam (Gold/Precious)
Topics about a Transgender and a hindu-muslim love story are intervowen and carried in a really sensitive and matured way.
This story 4.5/5

Love Panna Uttranum
The ingrained casteism, ignorance towards lesbian relationship, the societal pfessures to maintain an image, misuse of power is all portrayed in a short story.
This story 4/5

Vaanmagal
This story was the most disturbing and the most intense of the lot.
This story 5/5

Watched this one too and I agree with you a nice watch. Nothing extraordinary but shows the day-to-day life stories of the aspiring middle class

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I watched it two days back, and was disturbed by the realities. Superb feat though. Rated: 4.5/5
